You know the down side to all this is now that the competition is dropping out of the race Best Buy knows they will get 4 times as many customers and can treat people like shit.

F Best buy, they are over priced anyway. Get it online and shipped to you.

02/26/2009 05:37:17 PM · #28
i see. had you just ordered it via online and had it ship - you'd probably have a tracking number.

it sucks. but nothing is perfect. if you don't have to fight with the CC to get reimbursed - there's not really much to complain about....

i got coffee the other day $1.75 for a 20oz cup... i wanted regular - but ended up with hazlenut... ugh.... i hate hazlenut... i drank it anyway....

I placed the order at 7:50PM yesterday. I got the confirmation email right away. At this time, the laptop was "InStock" both online and with the staff (phone confirmation). I was told to wait for the pick-up email. The store closes at 9 PM. I called at ~8:35PM to check if I can come and pick it up. At this time they say its not in stock anymore. In 45 minutes, the website is still showing its in stock at this particular store, but the staff says it isnt. The staff also says I wont recieve the pick up notofication since they wont authorize it then. BUT I do get that email. In parallel, I get staff's email saying no need to come the pick up email means nothing. This isnt a joke, right?

Further, the pick up email says I can pick it up anytime in next 8 days. But it is now void, since the store wont honor it. I read it as "we will hold your item for next 8 days". What else does an order confirmation and pick up notification mean?

ETA: I quote the exact text after removing anyt identification strings:

"Your order is now ready for pickup during store hours at the XXXXXXXXXX Best Buy store #XXXX. To avoid order cancellation, please pick up your item(s) within 8 days"

Last year I had a similar "guarantee" from Best Buy for a piece of software I ordered online for store pickup. The bad news is that I made a trip to the store and they didn't have it. The good news is that I got a store credit as an apology ($20 or $25 if memory serves). I don't know if that policy is still in place, though.

Its all a big joke. Somehow I feel the draining economy is also affecting customer service quality - no matter what the industry. Its hard to get one good customer experience these days without getting into at least some hassle.

I'm still amazed that these stores are as popular as they are. Circuit City and BestBuy are in the same boat. BestBuy is still alive however.

In my humble opinion, FWIW, BestBuy is way overpriced on most stuff (Selling at MSRP or just below MSRP) and with the exception of a few employees, they don't know the first thing about the products they are selling. (no offense to the previous commenter who works at BestBuy, you probably know what you're doing )

If I'm going to pay full retail price for something, I am going to go down to my local camera shop or stereo shop and talk to an expert. If I want the cheapest deal and don't care about service, I am buying it from B&H or Amazon or Crutchfield or Adorama.

Ok, I'm stepping down from my soapbox now. :0)

That's SO backwards... When the economy's in the toilet, you ought to be fighting to retain every customer you have...

I dont claim to be a product expert, just a Customer Service expert. Quite honestly, even with my employee discount, when it comes to my camera gear. I buy local.. Everyone has to purchase where they fell comfortable from. I do buy all my computer stuff from BB (no real discount)Because they are competetive in that market.
Prash, good luck to you with your experience, I hope all works out the way it should...with you the customer being taken care of!

I looked online at bestbuy.com for a D50 (this was a while ago), and found it on special when you bought the kit. I thought great. I checked if it was instock, and the website said it was. The total price was something like $649 and the regular price was $699. I thought great...I would run over and pick one up. When I went I look under the glass and it said $699. I asked the salesman and he said it was $699. I told him I saw it online and he said the special must have ended and I could go to the kiosk and check myself. So I went over, and typed www.bestbuy.com and their homepage slowly loaded. I looked up the camera, and it said $699. I thought, jez, it was only 20 minutes earlier in the middle of the day. When I asked to see the manager they say it was whatever it says online.

So, I thought about it and was pretty mad. I walked over to the laptop computers and tried it again. I looked up the camera and it said $649. The laptops were connected to the real internet and the kiosks were redirected somehow to some other site. It was more than just a manager, because it was the whole website.

I then got the manager and salesperson and they honored the price. It was the last purchase I ever made there. Since then, my son wanted to buy some video games there and we walked around the store with our cell phones and looked up all the prices everywhere else and saw Best Buy is a ripoff.

That was the only other time I was in BestBuy and swear that I will never go in again.

Phew. I feel better about venting.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I wish mine ended that way.

I have been trying to talk to someone at the store since morning just to get a closure and to understand whether I should wait for new stock to come in.. but nobody seems willing to talk to me for obvious reasons.. so much for customer service.

When people are hired at these stores, dont they go through basic training (1-day) at least about how to talk to customers? That is common courtesy, right? I would greet even a stranger if we made eye contact. Well discussing all this is pointless. Nobody has gotton back to me from the store since morning, so I am considering this order cancelled. I just hope my card wont be charged for it. May be I should call the bank and make them aware.

Update: I just recieved a nice email from manager of the local store. He seems very supportive and genuine. At least I am invited to open a dialogue with the store now. I appreciate this gesture.. and would have been much better if the other staff had the courtesy to do the same.

Wow! This is unbelievable! Sounds almost like when teh store staff first refused to me on phone to honor the online price when I called them to check if the laptop is in stock. The person said that yes they do have it in stock. Then I told them I want to pay online and pick it up in teh store as it says on teh website, then he hesitated and suggested that I will have to pay the store price if I went to pick it up, which was 30% higher. I insisted that the website allows me to pay online and pick it up in the store.. upon which I got the nod to make the payment.

The rest is recorded as history in this thread.

This supports my earlier input. It is a large corporation, and as is usually the case, the left hand and right hand don't know what each other are doing.

Used to love Best Buy.
Hate it now.
I avoid it like the plague, unless I have an emergency.

I went to Best Buy to get a CF card because I had a gift certificate. I was looking at some DSLR and zooming in and a guy in a blue shirt asked me what that does and mimicked what I was doing. I told him it was the zoom. The he asked me how many times it zoomed, I guess like the point and shoots with #x zoom. I said I didn't know. He was the camera salesman. I was shocked.

In all fairness, when I was looking for a Canon 40/50d for demo, at a CCity (not BBuy), this salesman started trying to sell me a Rebel XSi, saying that it makes HD movies... until I told him that I had just sold my last cam which was an XSi, and that it doesnt shoot movies. He was shocked to know that.

i'm not sure where you get/got your games from. but for the most part - unless they are older releases/used games the price is usually pretty consistant, whether you buy them at best buy, gamestop, online, or any other merchant...

a new release for xbox is usually $59... for Wii $$49...

curious how you potentially would have been ripped off ?

What a mockery! I confirm its in stock, I agree to pay, then I am told they wont honor the order commitment, and now I am still charged for it!!

Cant a man do honest business these days?

I've heard a lot of horror stories here, so I will add my 2 good experiences with BB. 1st, My olympus c-4000 camera went dead, luckily I had the 'extended warranty'. Well BB tried to replace it with an 'equivalent' camera, that wasn't, which I refused. They no longer carried Olympus, but CC did. The manager refunded me my money, so that I could get the same camera, from their competitor. 2nd, 2007, the evening before Thanksgiving. I get released from the hospital following surgery, and I had seen a preview ad saying mitsubishi 65" tv for XXXX day after Thanksgiving. My wife and I go to the store, talk with the manager explain the situation, and he gives us the TV for that price, and we take it home that night. 2 different stores, in different cities, same good customer service. And I don't shop there all that often. Prash, I hope that dealing with the manager will straighten this out for you.

I know I'm going to get called a shill, but I have always gotten fabulous customer service from Crutchfield. I once ordered a new stereo from the store which was delivered to the wrong location - UPS's fault, not Crutchfield. I called to ask why the stereo showed as being shipped when it had never arrived. The person who signed for the stereo wasn't me, of course. They said they would start an investigation to find out what happened, but sent out a new stereo to my address the next day. They were very courteous and professional and I never had to pay any additional charges for the second stereo or additional shipping. I often can find the stuff they sell cheaper elsewhere, but have been a loyal customer ever since.

The store manager has initiated the refund for charges, but unfortunately it will take 7 days or so.

This makes me really mad - a company charges you for an item that you don't want, then they steal your money for a week and tell you that they just can't do anything to get it back to you faster. What total BS! If you had their money, they'd expect it to be refunded immediately - but never the other way around.
