last time i looked NO ONE is forced to vote on every image in a challenge, you only need to vote on 20% of the images to have your votes count.....

When the photos are displayed randomly you have no control over what will show up on your monitor next. Are you suggesting that thumbnail voting would be the way to go here? :-)

i am suggessting that you are not forced to VOTE on every image, you only need vote on 20% to make you vote count. So what I am suggessting is if you find the image offensive, DON'T vote on it and move to the next one

In addition....you don't even need to vote in this challenge. If you think there is a high possiblity that nudity will be in a challenge....why not just step away, and move on to the next subject. I completely respect that many don't want to see nudity. However, you also have control not to view the challenge. The word FORCED...is what bothered me the most. Nobody is forcing anybody to participate, vote, etc..

Agreed. But one could also ask if it was possible for Hawkeye to make a point without childishly voting a 1.

You're right. Instead of standing up like a man and voicing his opinion he could just keep quiet and vote 1's anyway. That would be the easy thing to do.

No, you missed my point. I do not have a problem with him voicing his opinion (not that makes him a man BTW). It just seems childish to give someone a vote of 1 on what may be a good photo. Personally if I'm offended by a photo and do not feel I can fairly vote on it I skip it.

Ok. How would you have him make his "point" in some manner other than his vote?

Not that he's alone in doing this. I think many people vote based on likes/dislikes and not always on photography technicals. Find an image that is liked by many and has technical merit, then that will rise to the top.

The other day I noticed this post in the Low votes suggestion thread. Made by Robert on 2/24/2009 @ 2:47:04pm.

BOLD added by me for emphasis.

What's wrong with that? Why should anyone care? It's a perfectly valid POV. Show the challenge results to a team of MoMA curators and I assure you they wouldn't agree, AT ALL, with who we have selected as winners. But do I care? No, that's not the game here. How about someone who's been here for years, like me, and is SO damned tired of seeing refracting water drops and splish-splashes of viscuous liquids that his finger automatically hits the 4-button every time he encounters one? Aren't I entitled to that reaction? Aren't I entitled to judge your work on its orignality as much as its technical sophistication?

I vote in a similar fashion. One of my pet-peeves is gory, violent or nasty gross challenge entries; they'll get a 1 vote from me every time.

It's not unusual to make a "point" - most people do, just in different ways. So again, how would you have Hawkeye make his?

It seems, to me, that 'being a man about it' implies being an adult about the situation, rather than acting like a child (ie, I don't get my way, therefore I will strike out until I DO get my way).

Apparently, all who read this thread are completely wrong in your choice of religion, language, sanctity, marriage, decorum and nudity. How DARE you disagree with the great and mighty (and egotistical) HELW!?!? You shall all burn in perpetuity... and you can't say you weren't warned. /sarcasm off/

I haven't participated in a challenge in over a year. This may be a good enough reason to try again. ;)

What's funny to me is that I never considered using human skin for this challenge because it's not 'original' in my opinion.

LOL!

Potatos have skin.

Apples have skin.

Animals have skin.

Be creative! Find something other than human to shoot naked. *grin*

I quite agree with you, but I'm also well aware that there's a LONG history of nudes in art, and that there are a LOT of people in DPC who like to shoot nudes. And these people rarely get a chance to showcase that part of their work in here, so I fully expect a significant number of nudes in this challenge, and I have no issues with that at all.

I hate cats. Hate 'em. Every cat picture I see gets a '1' from me. If there were a cat filter, I'd use it.

But for some reason I feel the need to vote on the "pets" challenge.

Hmm.

Pudding has skin, if you leave it out too long!

You are kind of making my point here. My quote wasn't limited to nudes. It was for those who vote low based on seeing a subject. In your comment, you vote gory, violent, nasty or gross a 1. Why? Photojournalism sometimes take photos war scenes, violent scenes, death to make a point. Does that mean it's a bad photo? There is a difference to having a reaction to how a photo makes you feel AND it's technicals. Here is where i have a problem...hawkeye sees a breasts votes 1...doesn't take the time to see why the breast was showing, was it done in tastefully or artistically, could you see it in a magazine or something. He just sees it and votes 1. Glad, you are saying that you see a gore and vote 1...well what if it was a captivating shot of a soldier saving someones life in iraq and the persons leg is falling off. Does the gore make it a bad shot?

I think the person who says they vote 4 on every waterdrop shot is wrong. Does he take the time to see if it is somewhat different? Does it have a better quality shot. Is lighting better? Maybe all those waterdrops he was voting on before were horrible and this one was well done. Now he saw four shots that looked exactly the same, you can see the frustration (unless of course in a water drop challenge).

My point is, if you can't take the time to try and take in the photo, then skip it. At least take in the photo to have a reaction and not just come out and vote 1.

There is one good thing here to be noted, The less you enjoy nudity the less you are likely to reproduce. I love hidden blessings.

As for hawkeye making his point, i think there are different ways of doing it. Voting 1 on every photo isn't they way. He posts in forums...that's the way to do it. He sends messages to SC. He tries and rally others behind him. Those are the ways to do it...and if that doesn't work, he finds another site that doesn't allow nudity.

Voting a 1 is just being malicious to those are pursuing their art....the same way he pursues his art. As I said before, we all have our own different specialities and we are here showcase and improve our specialty...our art.

Because I don't like them. At least not in the way they're presented here, usually for sensationalism and totally fabricated. See enough of that already in the promotion of games, movies, etc...don't need to see it here.

I have no problem with this. None. I think it's a little silly, but vote your vote. You only get one, after all.

If, however, you went to the discussion thread about the "medical oddities" challenge or some such to declare (again) your distaste for gore, I'd think you deserved some guff for it.

I hate cats too! 1's from me as well.

But I love cars. Any type of car. Old, new, rusty even dented. I'm giving them all 10's!

No, it's not, it is someone expressing their opinion and feelings about that photo, using the means of expression provided by the site. No one here has the right to tell someone else how they should feel when they look at any given picture.

I get plenty of ones. I interpret that as several people didn't like my picture. So what ... can you really imagine visiting a gallery with someone who differs with your opinion on a piece, and shaking them by the shoulders saying "Don't be an idiot -- you really []ought[/b] to like this!"?

Is it not possible to appreciate the lighting, use of aperture, and other skills required, regardless the subject? Of course we all have our druthers about various subject matter, but we DO all share a love of the craft.

Obviously, there are many reasons one could enter a challenge. However, the general purpose is to see how we rate against our peers regarding photographic skill and abilities. Consider this example:

You (theoretically) join a DPL team. The goal is to earn the best scores possible, right? What if a teammate asks you to critique their photo , AND it contains subject matter you do not agree with? Are you simply going to refuse to critique it, or even quit the team? Would it truly be so horrible to set aside your disdain momentarily, in order to help your teammate?

Are we not ALL members of a team? A team of photographers, brought together by our desire to learn and improve? Why not set aside differences, and provide a fair and honest critique... or simply move on (WITHOUT 'chastising' them by malicious voting)

I've seen a lot of posts in various threads lately that are an attempt to tell others, either directly or indirectly, how to vote, and it's beginning to drive me batty. Is it really that hard to vote the way that you think is fair and give everyone that same courtesy?

Dang. I have to agree with this. :-) I'd also pass on the challenge entirely (entering/voting) as I did for the challenge 'Hate' that ran in early 2007.

Because it's a SKIN challenge. My skin image will not be a 'nude'. If people are worried about nudity, there's a self-portrait challenge to enter/view instead.

Oh yes, for sure this is a skin challenge. People can do whatever they want. First thing I thought of were tattoos. But if it is such a big deal why not have a skin challenge without nipples, breasts, butts (male and female mind you) and things like that - specified in a rule -. And then a seperate real Nude Challenge.

It's probably because you subscribe to Penthouse and expected it to be a nude challenge...
