I didn't enter this challenge but I voted on it. I saw a lot of similar photos such as these, an old gas station with an old vehicle at the pumps:

I know they're not all from the same place so my question is, is this common in the US? I've never seen a gas station museum or a working gas station done up like an old one.

Interesting question that one. I drove acros Norway the other day and only saw one gas station similar to those.

From what I found, they aren't common, but they do happen. I found a list of vintage/refurbished gas stations, but there were none in my state. There were one or 2 one state over.

Karen;

This was my shot, taken at the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

I live in a more rural area. We have a few old stations that are run down but none that have old cars in front of them unfortuantly.

4 of the shots are the same location...(the ones with the shell emblem)you can see the name on the truck or the wall then there are 2 others that are the same...

In Bennington, VT there is an old station that is made into a museum...I think someone ( CEJ) did a shot of that one...Hemmings is in the shot....my husband likes to go to these kind of places when we travel...so we see quite a few of them (more in the North and the Mid-West)...it is my trade off for all the time that he sits and waits for me to take pictures...

A Lot of people collect them.

It is not uncommon. Americans love their history and in some parts of the country our history only dates back 100+ or so years. My shot, which is a closeup of the same kind of pumps shown here came from a diner which had two restored 1920 American Visable pumps out front as decorations. The theme and name of the diner was the Golden Nozzle.

One of my outtakes is a preserved vintage Texaco station that is now being used as an office.

Fortunately, I didn't have 6 other DPC members entering the same station. However, I did have the similar coincidence of some of my local Flickr contacts also visiting this the same weekend and we were all posting the same subjects.

Luxury .... take a look at what I had to deal with to get this shot.

the photo I took called Everglades Gas Station was in fact an old gas station that is now an eating establishment. I had to take and crop my photo not to include the other side which is fairly modern looking with beer signs, etc..

There are several historic gas stations in Illinois that have been restored along the "historic Route 66." Unfortunately, I didn't have the time or money to drive to any of them.

We have a chain of chicken wing joints in our area called Quaker Steak and Lube. The original location in Sharon, PA, was a service station many years ago, and they kept the gas station theme throughout the chain.

I was fairly surprised I didn't see a relic from one of their locations in the challenge (unless there was one in there and I didn't recognize it).

I was actally wondering how many other members would take pics of the same gas station I did

It was fairly easy to find on the internet and it is a somewhat short drive from Seattle where I knew there were other DPC members. It looks like 3 others did use it as well but they did it in b&w and did it much better LOL! Pity is I actally found another old gas station further on our drive that was also interesting but didn't have the appeal as this one.
I think there is a certain charm and uniqueness to them instead of the same cookie cutter gas stations you see on every corner.

... my image was taken on one of the busiest streets in Detroit (Woodward Ave) ... the street that the Dream Cruise is held on every year ... we're lucky enough to still have this gem of a station. When I drove by the first few times there weren't any cars in front of it and it was extremely sunny ... came back later in the day and there were actually 3 cars out there ... parked my truck and got my camera out ... found out that I'd left my CF cards at home, doh! Had to circle back and grab them ... when I returned, it was dusk and just before closing time ... they'd put one car away already and by the time I got out of my truck they'd taken the second car ... which actually worked better for my composition ... I rattled off about 17 shots and they took the car in the photo and put it in the garage ...

There was one other image in the challenge that was taken at the same station ... I was surprised because I didn't think that there were many active members in Detroit ... I know there are quite a few scattered over the rest of the state though ...

Here is one of my "Gas Stations" outtakes:

Here is what I submitted:

One other photographer submitted a photo from that same station...

And there was one other photograph that someone entered that was so similar to mine that, when I first saw it, I had to do a double-take, thinking it was my entry...
