Layer Cake starring Daniel Craig was the first film directed by Matthew Vaughn who had been a pure photographer until that point. There are some really stunning scenes set in central London.

For less in-your face, more sensitive/nuanced cinematography, I've always been fond of "Babette's Feast", and a lot of Ingmar Bergman is extremely well done. And of course someone mentioned Fellini, who lived in a world of his own...

Your mention of Ingmar Bergman reminded me of this masterpiece;

The Sacrifice (Andrei Tarkovsky)

For inspiring cinematography I always turn to the films of Charlie Chaplin. Wow.

I did an analysis of City Lights for my niece, complete with stills. I should put that on the web somewhere.

Give us a heads up if you do... Of his work my favourite is Modern Times for a number of reasons...

Ridley Scott's The Duellists is just about the most gorgeous film I can recall.

The Last Of The Mohicans has simply jaw dropping photography, the soundtrack isn't half bad either!

I was watching Brad Pitt - Jesse James movie a week or so back and still cannot get over the photography in it. If you have not seen - watch even without the sound. Just amazing!! Large bits of the movie would stand as stills and a few minutes would make just amazing images stand alone.

So - What other movies do you suggest in the same ball park?

Gotta love Alberta scenery...

If you are a fan of good lighting you need to watch "Girl With a Pearl Earring" 2003. More often that not I find my self watching for good lighting in movies and that one has some stunning work in it. Of course it does no hurt that Scarlett Johansson is in it :)

my wife said of Scarlett Johansen, something along the lines of "what the hell is wrong with her lips?" I haven't been able to look at her since.

I hope you will, I would like to read it. Once I started looking I was surprised how many Charlie Chapline films there are online. Sometimes it seems like our entire culture is online.

I know it's not as refined as a lot of the imagery mentioned here. But for raw mind blowing, jaw dropping cinematography, I think the Mad Max series is worth a mention. Just my $0.02 though

It's not really a movie, but the "Planet Earth" series of documentaries always blows me away.

Have to agree, Jeremiah Johnson had some great scenes in it. As well as another Redford film, "The Horse Whisperer". I'll add "Legend of the Falls" to my list also.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Fall

Same director as The Cell.
Must see the HD trailer.. link supplied.

This movie is all shot on real locations,
not like most stunning CG work these days.
