At Woot.com. Not the high end model, but it's still more accurate than eyeballing it. I'm in for one.

They only sell a single item a day. Offer is good either until the next day, or until sold out, so if you have been waiting for a decent deal, it's time.

If you are in Texas, and you buy more than one, use the coupon code "taxsucks" to get a discount equal to the state sales tax. (BTW, that code is good on any orders over $45)

Thanks, Steve. I just bought one. I had heard of Woot but this is the first time I've purchased anything from them.

They really have the art of impulse purchasing down pat. I bought an external DVD burner for my wife to use on her Mac for $35 the other day. Also snagged a slingshot monkey and USB woot-off lights this week.

It's as addictive as DPC and more expensive.

Did you get one of those USB pole dancers last week? Only $9.99!

I missed it. Was that during the Woot-off?

I don't remember. I usually just check once a day before bed.

YES I did, and it was during the WOOT off.

I was just going to post the same thing, but did a search for another Woot thread and found this one. At least I can bump this for ya.

This looks like the Pro version that supports two different monitor settings from one unit. Darn! I just did the Pro software upgrade directly from Pantone and paid $39. I needed to upgrade my old Huey to work with two montiors now that I have a dual setup. Could have gotten a brand new unit.

The photo implies the pro version, but the catalogue number listed under "Product" is for the basic version.

Yes, it looks like they posted the wrong product image. But it's still a good deal. A quick online search show the basic model sells for $68-80 in most places.

They're all gone, dammit, but the writeup was worth the visit anyway :)

I ordered 1 last night :)

I've only rarely gotten a refurb from woot that did not work. I think I had a $20 salad spinner that did not work, and a $7 MP3 player that was intermittent. The one time I complained (they sent me the wrong item by accident) they did me right in a timely manner, sending the correct item, and letting me keep the wrong one. It is a risk when buying a refurb of course, but in my experience, Woot is a reputable company. The Huey is being sold as a new item, not a refurb, however.

Got mine today. I'm in the same area as Woot is, so my orders tend to arrive fast. (At least there is some benefit from having to pay the state sales tax!)

The device itself is marked as the S5 Pro, however it does not come with the pro software. It comes with the basic software, with the Pro as an upgrade you can buy.

Important thing is, if you are running Windows Vista, the original software that comes with it is not Vista compatible. (At least the installer says so.) The upgrade is free, but you have to register with Pantone's support first. I already did it, so I put the software on Yousendit for others here to grab without a fuss. Here is the link: Huey v1.0.5 The link expires on the 5th of March or after 100 downloads.

As expected, after calibration, my colors were less saturated and much lighter. It looked way too light at first, but much of it was that I had calibrated with the lamp over my desk on, and that had affected it. Also, the device has the ability to adjust for ambient lighting changes. I turned that function off, as I felt it was messed up by the lamp so close overhead.

So, are you satisfied? You have CRT or LCD?
Do you now expect your editing to saturate the colors even more, now that your monitor appears lighter?

Inquiring minds want to know, as mine should arrive Saturday!

Well, human nature is to prefer bright saturated colors, so initially it did not look as good. I can just slightly discern some subtleties that i did not see before, the grayscale under the voting boxes is a little more differentiated at the light and dark ends. I have to assume this is more accurate. Time will tell for sure.

For anyone else that was coned with this - See this FAQ for a possible replacement for one without the colour cast.

Linkie

Anyone else... Find a different product and a different place to purchase.

Conned with what? Are you saying you bought one with a color cast?
03/01/2009 03:57:04 PM · #21
My colors look different, as expected, though I am hard pressed to say there is any color cast. The whites look dfferent, but it's hard to tell if the color cast existed before or after.

I think conned is an interesting choice for terminology on this- as Pantone has acknowledged the problem and is offering a decently simple fix. Yes, there is a problem, but if you dont do your homework and realize that the potential problem is there, that makes you a pretty poor consumer. Just my two cents.

Yes.... The cast is VERY red/brown.... and no it's not that I am just not used the the calibrated colours... It's VERY distinctive. If you have a look on the discussion on the woot board, I am hardly in the rare end of experiences in this batch. It IS working for a lot of people, so clearly, it's setup or monitor types or something.

I say "conned" because the Pantone web site has this as a known issue with a pro-former for requesting a new one..... Obviously not an infrequent odd ball issue. I understand the odd bad result but since there are a stack of other people that bought the same batch have cast issues (seems it's either red or green), I find that hard to believe.

I DID some research and this issue was supposed to be fixed. I assumed this meant going forward it would not be an issue. What else are you supposed to think?

robs, sorry, I just reread my comment, and it does come across in a bad tone. My appologies. I did research before purchasing to, and realized that the potential for this is definately there. They acknowledge a problem, yes, but after how many of these things are already shipped out? Also, we dont know how long these ones that woot.com were sitting on a warehouse shelf somewhere, so with truely new released ones, it probably is something that they have corrected. Again, sorry, I should have explained myself more.

Rob, thanks for answering my question. The one I ordered hasn't arrived yet -- hopefully it can be trusted (no, I didn't research it, except to see that Woot's price was significantly lower than elsewhere). Hmm, now do I need to buy another one to see if my Pantone is accurate?
