Could be fun to see ridiculous home adornments from around the world (or is this just an American thing?) |

I tend to think that this is an American thing - but even so, it'd be interesting to see how the nature of "lawn tackies" changes throughout the States - and what the rest of the world considers them to be.

It's how an aunt of mine always refers to them. "Lawn tackies" just seems fitting to me, although I'll admit that I have a soft spot for pink plastic flamingos and lawn gnomes. :-)

Doesn't count, that's HALLOWEEN. DNMC. Only genuine, year-round, tacky ornamentation counts, like :

Oh there's lots of tacky lawns in Canada too, just that you can't see them now, they're all buried under the snow.
Would make a good challenge in July. |

Are you sure I don't leave them up all year? ;)

Umm, why do Americans put pink plastic flamingos in their lawns? |

There's a beautiful old house near here with stately 2-story columns rising from the front porch and a grand sweeping curve of a driveway. Looks like it would have fit right in as a backdrop for Gone With the Wind. Until recently (new owners, maybe?) each Christmas they would set up a Santa and his sleigh drawn by 8 pink flamingos alongside the driveway ;-) |

There's a funny list going around in e-mail that starts with You know your from Cheektowaga, NY when:
You have one or more of the following on your front lawn:
pink flamingo
"Mary on the half shell"
shiny orb on a pedestal
silhouette of a hick leaning against a tree
shrine to your favorite saint
shrine to the Buffalo Bills
a concrete goose that's dressed up funny
a lawn jockey -- that's black
wooden cutout of a fat butt bending over
plastic deer
jugs filled with water, because you think it keeps dogs from peeing on your lawn

That's sacriligeous! And pretty funny, if only because I visited the Buffalo area a lot as a kid 'cuz my father's family is from there and I can visualize exactly what you are talking about. |
