I want an action to save as in CS3 that does not require input from me. I want it to save the file in the same folder but append or change the filename.

eg I open 123.jpg and run my action to resize etc and the automatically "save as" to the same folder as 123_web.jpg

How can I do this?

cheers

I'd say use image processor, choose save as jpeg (although it makes a new folder in your folder of choice called JPEG) and choose "Resize to fit" and put in your dimensions.
That's what I do anyway

I have the same problem as odinndagur, and using image processor is not an option, since I work with one photo at a time. I work at a photolab, and we run passport photos through photoshop. My workflow goes something like this:
1) open file
2) rotate (ruler & rotate arbitrary)
3) crop

After that is done, I run my action:
1) curves adjustment (our camera gives a magenta color cast)
2) resize to 400ppi (bicubic sharper)
3) save to work folder
4) close

I'd like photoshop to name the ready passport photo to passport01.jpg, next one passport2.jpg etc. I could use the original filenames, but our camera is olympus and it seems to name the files in random. It'd be a lot easier to track the number of passport photos already taken, and easier to print only the latest photo, since the filenames are random, they're not in correct order.

Open file, duplicate BG layer, resize, save-as JPG will force "copy" into the save-as filename, does that help? In other words, IMG_0001 will automatically save-as IMG_0001_copy. It will save-as a copy any time there's more than one layer in the file being saved. Since you're making an action, that's what I'd do: just add a layer as part of the action.

Russell Browns Easy Process 1-2-3 works great for this. You can save in 3 different sizes, formats, etc in any combintaion. (WIN) (MAC) is for CS2, but works with CS3 also (does on my Mac). Lots of tutorials on RBrowns site also
