I'm sure this has been asked before but i'm looking at picking up my first D-SLR. Upgrading from the SONY V1.
Looking at the Sony A200 or Nikon D60. Both are close in price the sony a tad bit cheaper.
One of the issues i have with the nikon is the Auto focus is not built in the camera and i want
to get a 50mm 1.8 which means i have to manually focus, not sure if this is a huge deal since
i have never had to before. The nikon also takes an SD card instead of the compact flash card.
The sony seems like it has everything i would want, except it feels cheaper then the nikons do when holding it.
I would buy a used D70 but i'm afraid of buying something used with no warranty. its a 50/50 chance.
anyone have any opinions on this???

One thing I like about the Sony line is lens compatibility - if it's a Sony/Minolta A mount lens, you can use it, and there are many out there. If you want to shoot with a 50mm, there was an article on Popular Photography recently with some comparisons. Also, regarding Sony, you can pick up a used Minolta 50/1.7 for approx $100. I have two of these and find it a very nice lens regarding sharpness and color.

Not sure about the Nikon D60, but with Sony the built-in Image Stabilization really gives you an extra couple of stops in shooting hand-held in low light situations. The sweet part of this (other brands offer in-camera stabilization also) is that you're not paying for image stabilization with individual lenses as many Canon/Nikon users do.

Battle of the 50's

The biggest factor is how comfortable is the camera to you. Ergonomics are important so you definitely want to go pick these up in a store, fiddle with the controls, etc...

Give this thread an hour or two and you should start seeing some interesting feedback. :-) Good luck!

I;ve heard that Nikon's chips are made by Sony. So maybe the image quality of a Sony would be comparable. Completely non-scientific and unresearched comment - of course.

Also check out the Canon 1000D.
Very similar spec to Nikon D60 and better image quality than D60 and Sony A200 and as far as i know, no auto focus problems with canons 50mm f1.8.

well i guess i should throw in the Rebel XS 1000D as well. I would really like to get the Nikon but it looks like as if i would at least have to get the D80 which put me in a new price bracket. I'm trying to be realistic on how much i would actually use or get out of the camera. But i do know that i need a SLR. The sony is real tempting but for some reason i'm nervous about the image quality. Overall scores seem low with 6.2 being the high, LoL.

I really hope you're not serious about using DPC score avg's to make your decision on a camera purchase. ???

Is so, please take a look at this page --> Avg 6.58 to 7.38

Best of luck. :-)

I appreciate everyones input.

I know you mentioned concerns about buying used, but I'd consider it, especially if buying from someone that has a long-term relationship here on DPC. For example, I was tempted by this recent offer and I don't even need another camera! :-) Sold: Canon 400D with... There have been other reasonable offers as well.
