| Gonna be there this weekend and probably have a lot of time to kill on Saturday. Probably middle of day lighting, but looking for input--never been there. |

I lived there briefly. There *is* a Lake Springfield, but I never spent any time there. It's the wrong time of year for the Illinois State Fair. They do have a couple of malls. :-/
Your best bet may be to do the Abe Lincoln circuit. There's a new Lincoln museum, and downtown some old buildings where he used to practice law. There's the Lincoln Tomb as well. A 20 mile drive away is New Salem, where they have a historic village. I haven't been there in years. Unfortunately New Salem is also seasonal.

| I've only been to Springfield once... and that was almost 10 years ago for some Cub Scout trip I went on. All I remember is that it's really boring. I'm sure there is some nice stuff to shoot there... but you might have to search to find shots that don't look like brochure pictures. |

Shelbyville is quite a haul from Springfield. We used to go camping there in the summer.
Lincoln is about 30 minutes north on I-55. I grew up there. The downtown area is small, but the courthouse is rather nice for a small town building and the square is a nice walk. Go have a horseshoe at the Blue Dog Inn, grilled cheese at the diner in the Arcade, probably some good picturesque small town Illinois stuff there. There's also Kickapoo State Park and the train depot. It's funny, I hated all of it when I was growing up there, but I could love to go back there now to spend the day wandering around with my camera. It's not showy, touristy stuff, but there's a lot of character I'd love to capture sometime. That's really the essence of what you'll find to photograph in Illinois in general.
I have a friend in Jacksonville (practically a twin city to Spfld) who might have some good ideas. I can put you in touch if you like.

| Whatever you do, do not take photos of the smoke stacks off the east side of I-55. Apparently it's a secure water treatment facility. I was up there a few years ago and thought I'd take some photos of the smoke stacks... before I left that day the security from the facility as well as the police in Springfield wanted to know what I was doing taking the photos. They didnt really believe me when I told them it was for an online photo challenge. That might be why the FBI came to my house a couple weeks after the incident wanting to know why I was taking the photos. Stay away... far away. I'd follow violinist123's advice and stay in your room. |
