I know someone who is gonna ribbon too! I wonder if we are thinking the same "he". :-) it's a great shot for sure and I picked it the first night to ribbon. So i'm feeling good that I can recognize winning work when I see it. Now if I could just produce it.

edited to change hood to good.

I wonder which photo you are talking about

Sadly at this point a 10 doesn't seem to improve my score as much as a 5 or 4 seems to damage it

Lots have been handing our low scores this weekend bleh!

Mathematically, isn't that code for 7.5+??

By the looks of it this will raise my overall average, and one added my entry to their favorites. Can't complain.

Well I'm happy to hoover up any unwanted 10's out there :- )

Sadly unless someone starts handing out 25's I'm still not going to get anywhere near my top line . .

OK pet entrants, just a few thoughts from a non-participating voter/commenter (until I got sick of making the same 3 comments over and over and over again:

WAY too many close crops. If it's a head shot, leave in the ears (and rest of head); if you're doing a full body shot, leave in the paws and legs.

Far too many severely tilted horizons. A slight tilt is OK. An extreme tilt is not.

Stop using camera flashes! They do NOTHING for your shot, make the subject look like crap and glare out everything.

OK rant over. But if your shot suffers from at least one of the above, no nasty pms.

Heyyy...how did you know that mine was the blurry, eye-flash blown, crooked image of my pet???? And just cause he has horrible ears, that is no reason to pick on him...poor thing...he is wimpering now!!!

No offense, but this is such a naive point of view. If you shoot a portrait, you present what you want to present. A decision made all the more important when dealing with the ludicrously small image sizes allowed on this site. So if someone thinks an animal's nose, or snarl, or eyes is the thing that 'makes' that animal or gives it personality then I would hope they shoot/crop towards that end rather that make that aspect of the animal unnecessarily small in the frame just to accommodate some fetish about seeing complete body parts.

And I would add if it's a grey cat, forget it.

Lost .2+ over the weekend, still happy with the score. Extremely happy on how the shot came out. A favorite is always very cool!

I guess I should clear up the crop remark. Hey, I took my fair share of comments about too close a crop before I began shooting wider so I could include all of my subject, THEN crop as much as I liked.

But if you've sliced off the tips of ears, paws etc, which means it looks like they were meant to be included and got chopped somehow along the way, it looks sloppy. And even in shots where the ears blahblah are intact, still far too tight a crop around pet in many cases.

In terms of using shot size as an excuse to have to lop parts off...well, there is the option of resizing your pic in pretty much all versions of PS. Use it!

I think thats your personal preference. Close crops dont bother me. Nor do I think its a bad technical choice to leave the ears out in a close crop. But that is also my personal opinion.
