Woot!!! I'm finally getting Photoshop! I've been using GIMP for years now. It's worked pretty good but I finally decided that I need to get an actual Adobe program. I know there are tons but which book, tutorial program, etc. should I get to help me learn the fastest?

Look at Scott Kelby's books. I have many of them and I find them great.

I've used "Classroom in a Book". Great lessons!

Adobe TV has produced tons of free educational videos for teaching and learning Photoshop CS4 and make a great starting point if you have a reasonable Internet speed:
Introducing Photoshop CS4

I've found them to be excellent and as good as anything you'd pay for if you have some familiarity with still image editing at all. I highly recommend reviewing and bookmarking their videos.

If you are a heavy duty GIMP user then you'll be pleased to know that GIMP copied Photoshop's image editing metaphor so there is a lot of the underlying functionality of PS CS4 that you will already be familiar with once you fight through the learning curve.

But make no mistake about it. There is a serious learning curve with CS4 regardless what educational tools you buy, find, steal or study. I just updated from CS2 to CS4 and there is a gianormous amount of new learning involved.

Good Luck. It is the best still image editing software there is but is also the hardest to learn.

It really depends on your learning style. If you have a good book store in your area, go browse. Not all books are written the same and you'll find one that works better than another.

Before you go out & buy anything, check out the Tutorials section here. There's some really good tips/tricks that will help to get you on the right track (especially given that you've already spent years using gimp).

your CS4 should come with a 30-day trial at Lynda.com
