Why is it that "photographers" are added to the site favorites-but have never participated in a challenge- example user "peej" was added today, but I clicked on their profile and they have absolutely NO photos? This has happened before-on another occasion I clicked on the sites favorite list and only 2 or 3 of the 10 or so photographers had actually participated. What is the advantage to add yourself or someone who doesn't have anywork on this site?

It could be that the person has a current photograph in a challenge. It could be that the person who added them are real life friends or even virtual friends. There have been some people who are vocal in forums and so people add them to their favs as a way to remember them and check to see if they ever do enter a challenge. Some people only upload portfolio shots and not enter challenges. There could be a number of reasons why.

I've noticed that too.

I think it's more like someone knows that photographer, and told them to sign up, so they did, and since they know each other, they will favorite the other.

Not fair IMO

Not fair? Is there a cash bonus for getting added as a favorite photographer?

I have a couple of people in my favorites lists with no photos. I found DPC through a pretty active group of participants on another forum. When I first joined DPC, I added all the members of the other forum who had an account here to my favorites, so I could track their entries. Turned out a few never ended up participating. I've left a couple in, because they're really good photographers, and I'm hoping for the day they decide to enter. Never imagined it would be a problem for anyone...

it's not a problem unless people are getting recognized as deserving participants when there has been no participation (visually speaking)-ya, ok maybe they've said some wonderful things in forums but the purpose of site favs is to give recognition to those participants whose "work" you admire.

????? It is????

Quiet frankly, I think a person could be a favorite (or a picture) for any number of reasons, including all of those mentioned above. I am not aware of any "rule" for choosing.

Like I used to tell my students, "It's okay. Really it is."

I think people add favorites as bookmarks to photographers they want to keep track of.

There can be many reasons for adding a photographer to one's Favourites list.
You admire their challenge entries
You admire their portfolio images
You admire their posts in forum and want an easy way to find threads to which they have contributed
You have become friends (either before or via this site) and want an easy way to access their profile, email address, Private Message link etc

What's not fair about any of that?

It's not like there is a prize for being top in the list of site favourites... a little friendly kudos... but no prizes.

i guess this thread is digressing-I think my initial question was not really about why people add people in general-but why at times the site favs is filled with users who have absolutely no work and haven't particicipated in forums-and I think some of you answered it quite well with-"their my friend" OR "I want to track their work."

I've been trying to pay people to pick as their fav, but it's not working. I must not be offering enough...
