Oooo hold it. I just looked over the first challenge they had in this and it looks like you can just use "elements" of a picture. The winner used the log and a few blades of grass from a brown ribbon picture to create a big and beautiful landscape that included a log and grassy backdrop. Maybe there is hope yet if this is what it is about.

Just for example, here's an original brown ribbon photo:

Here's the Blue Ribbon from "Brown Ribbon Deja Vu I", which is a "remake of the above image:

So, evidently loosely emulating concept is sufficient: all these have in common is a log in water. In particular, the original was entered in a duotone challenge, so the remake would be no more likely to have won that challenge than the original.

My feelings exactly. And there are a few blank or all-black images, which mean you could work anything out. Neverthless, after browsing a lot of browns, I guess there a couple I can recreate :)

Yeh I saw all black or for a landscape you see a light bulb. For a door challenge you see a neighborhood. For anything but a landscape you have a picture of nothing but a solid blue sky. For the blue challenge you have a hand bleeding. hahaha. Im saying to myself how am I supposed to do this? But if we can just use elements from the picture like the log and grass thing then I guess I can find one or two to do to.

my question is, if the brown ribbon photo doesn´t match the challenge, like a flower in fauna challenge, can I use photos like this for the challenge?
02/02/2009 10:40:48 AM · #33
Yes.

Ok people. Here's how you get a high score in this challenge:

1. Find a brown ribbon shot that has a subject of which you can take a totally fantastic shot.
2. Take a totally fantastic shot of said subject, process it up all DPC-pretty like and enter it.
3. Give it a title that at least vaguely points to the original - people will check. Because you used the same subject (even though your image is totally different), you won't get DNMCed.

That's it. Nothing else matters.

my eyes hurt from looking at old brown winners ...
aaaghhh..

i have a question...

I choose a challenge, but if the brown ribbon is something like this:

I can only change my choice, right?
02/03/2009 09:08:26 AM · #38
After reading this thread, I went looking...

I don't think this challenge is that hard really (at least to find subject material--shooting is something else entirely!)... just go back and find a random challenge and click on the back page. Either it is something you could work with or not.

Lots of brown ribbon winners had good intentions, just bad results. Lots of out of focus and low light shots. The subject matter is pretty diverse though, from still lifes to animals.

maybe... =D okay you convinced me

LOL has anyone noticed, in looking through the brown ribbons, that there seem to be a lot of random dog shots? I have seen at least 3 or 4 dog photos that were completely unrelated to the challenge.

I wish I could redo a shot that I took personally. This shot here is something that I think that I could redo so well!!!

Feel free to do this shot I just love to see water droplet shots!

PLEASE let me redo my own!!! =(
02/03/2009 10:28:24 AM · #41
You can redo your own. Sure, the details say not to, but no one will know during voting. If you score well, some people might be mad at you after the challenge ends, but it can't affect your score. I guess it just depends on whether you would like a high score or would rather honor the intent of the challenge.

Sure, just check out Brown Ribbons in "Challenge History" until you find one you want to work with. Nobody's counting.

I think what it meant when it said not to choose your own brown was to choose the lowest in a challenge, not the lowest scoring of your personal challenge entries.

This is my personal brown;

but it missed the challenge brown by one place. I'd love to reshoot it but alas, so near and yet so far...

eta; oh yeah, I can't reshoot it anyway because my son wore out the slippers! lol

Just find another brown ribbon that's a water drop shot, or something like a water drop shot, or vaguely resembles one (an all black image, perhaps) and you're good.

Must admit I'm not all that excited about this challenge. Think I'll just wait to see what comes up for the opens this week.

It's definitely time consuming to search old threads and find likely candidates. I started to create a thread with thumbnail links, but of course that would take forever and would also create a gigantic thread!

What I find funny is how often the last place photo is unusable for this challenge. It's often DNMC, with neither title nor subject fitting the challenge theme nor each other. If the challenge was "Orange" and the subject was a blue toy with the title "Leroy"... which are we to recreate?
02/03/2009 11:05:37 AM · #47
The challenge that the photo was in originally is irrelevant. Your deja vu entry doesn't need to meet the original challenge. I think I'll quote myself just in case some people missed it.

I'm sorry, but I'm gonna be pissed if Irene does this and wins.

What would you call the entry in this brown ribbon challenge that comes last? Does that then also get the `Brown Ribbon or even something more special?
02/03/2009 12:17:46 PM · #50
SocalSteve made this Browns for Challenges 2 - 808 pdf file of all the brown ribbon winners from the thumbnails for the first deja vu challenge. It is missing the last year of brownies but should help you see most of them easier.

As for the winner of the last Deja Vu challenge, there was some backlash towards that photo as if it won for being just a sell out to DPC voters and not because it was good entry for the challenge. I would guess that this time around you need to be closer to the original, but I could be wrong.

Enjoy the link.
