Ordered my LB Composer--should have it by Wednesday!!

So, not long after that, look for some lame LB-Newbie shots from me. :-)

My April FS self portrait with the Meerschaum again

Do I really look like (Hugh Laurie) House?

You kinda do in this shot. It's the first thing I thought when I saw the thumb. Cool shot BTW.

I think this is a Lensbaby... neat to see it in commercial use!

Possible lensbaby shot on Citibank login page

It could be. But it's probably a crop, the sweet spot seems to be too wide. Judging by the flatness of the light and typical halo effect around the figures I'd dare to say it was shot without any aperture ring... ;-)

First shoot with my Lensbaby Muse. I kinda wish I could've sprung for the Composer, but ah well.

Second shoot with my Muse. You know, with a little practice, I think I could get used to it.

I really don't understand the glom about lensbaby ... Could someone explain to me the advantage of this as opposed to a Photoshop blur vingnette with more control over the size and clarity and transition and graduation of the sweet spot?

Good point, well made Greetmir. When the orig LB came out I ignored it as a fad. I now own the Composer and its a different type of photography and yes, whilst they are not everybodies cup of tea many of us love them. If I get a chance tomorrow I'll nip out and take 2 pics of the same subject, one with my LB and the other with a 'proper' lens and am pretty darn sure a you won't be able to duplicate the LB shot in PS easily.

There, you have been challenged ;)

Mostly they're just really fun. :-)

It's not only about the effect. It's the shooting with that lense, and it's pretty amusing.

For me, it is about a different way of viewing; having a Lensbaby on my camera makes me look for compositions that work with the effect. I take different photos as a consequence; with a conventional lens, the image in the viewfinder doesn't lead me in the same places. Then of course, there is the matter of being able to expand what you can do under Basic Editing - but that is secondary.

I would echo Paul's comments below and add that for me, I like the fact you have to use the camera in manual. I spend way more time composing and thinking about the final image than I ever do with a non LB. Consequently, I seldom do much cropping to the final image. Thus I find the discipline of using a manual lens (probably applies to all manual lenses not just the LB), is good for me.

Exactly!

Plus, I never cropped any of my LB photos.

Lensbaby also permits correcting perspective, especially when photographing tall buildings.
