soooooo I told you guys about 8 months ago I got a strobist setup. I have 2 vivitar 285hv's and I was suprised at how little difference there was between full power and 1/16th power. The recycle times were exactly the same and the light output seemed the same. I was a little frustrated to be honest... well tonight, I want to hit myself with a frying pan....

This is the knob I was twisting to adjust power.

you can't see it but on the outside edge are the power fractions. point that little arrow on the power setting you want and away you go.....

or not...

Turns out that is nothing more than a guide that helps you figure out the correct exposure. Does nothing to the flash strength. You plug in 3 of 4 variables and it gives the 4th that's all...

The knob that actually changes the power looks like this

and is on the front of the flash...

8 months
2 weddings
3 senior portrait sessions
2 model shoots
countless practice on the wife/challenge entry shoots

...and I FINALLY just figured that out

I'm ashamed...

They have support groups for this kind of thing...

My family got me a t-shirt that says "Real men don't read instructions"...I told them it should say, "Real men don't read instructions, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th time".

Glad you got it figured out Patrick, now go flash everyone.

well to be honest I got them used off B&H....
but even If I got the instructions I prolly never would have read them. I saw a shirt awhile ago I should have bought that said

"When all else fails... dig the instructions out of the trash!"

Thanks for the news flash.
It reminds me of myself so much that I will be smiling for a few hours now, thinking about your adventure in gadget land. : )
I have two S3 Pro Fuji bodies, and still have not learned how all the bells and whistles work or what they do. I got the first one about 4 years ago.

Good one, Patrick. Thanks for the laugh. :-)

boy I'll tell you what though. I'm loving the 1/8 power recycle times in comparison to the full power.

LOL... Yeah flashes are more flexible when you can ACTUALLY adjust the power :-)

Don't feel bad. I was shooting with somebody else's setup one day (same flash) and did the same exact thing. At least the owner of the flash was there to straighten it out for me.

I smack myself for being retarded every day, whether I need it or not.

LOL. While I didn't make that mistake I did have a little trouble figuring out where you plug the wireless trigger into that flash. I saw the small hole near the bottom but kept saying to myself that can't be it (since it doesn't look like a typical port).

Well you never know when ones arm might be tired, or you might just be un-motivated. :D
