We've all had them... shots that we just knew were ribbon quality material. Like Ralphie's theme on the Red Ryder range model air-rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing which tells time... we worked hard, we got it just perfect and knew it would connect with the voters.

Then the judging began...

And the scores started out well, but then plummeted in the overnight. And the "You'll shoot your eye out" comments started pouring in. And the final grade? Well let's say Ralphie's teacher was merciful.

Perhaps looking back on it, you're more skilled and you see the some of those entries weren't really that good. But some. Well some, you still just don't know why the DPC crowd didn't get the vote right (grin).

Which challenge entry of yours remains to this day the most puzzling for you as to why it didn't fare better. And let's try to keep it to those that really scored low... say below a 5.5 average. Not those that you felt deserved a 7 and only got a 6.8. :)

I have to run an errand and will post mine in a bit... but wanted to get the ball rolling.

I can't post it yet, but I Ansel Adams II entry is tanking.

I never thought it would ribbon, but it is still sitting 1-1.5 points below where I though it would be.

I am more confused by my score than anything else. The picture is sharp and I think the composition is decent. Based on the few comments I have recieved, it produces love it or hate it responses. It definitely suffers in the detail department when downsized to DPC sizes.

I don't know if this is my most disappointing challenge result, but I was definitely bummed by this one. I really like it a lot and thought it would score higher.

Prolly too subtle.

Good thread...

I'm the same as the previous two posts in that my most disapointing result so far is clearly going to be
my current entry in Glasses.
Other than the focus being a bit soft I'm struggling to see why it's in the mid 4s with only two comments.

As a result I have requested a critque to try and get a better understanding.

This one, I really thought it would get a few bonus points for humor. Maybe it did? And I just overrated it.

My Ansel II shot will be a very close second.

Motion Blur. I thought it deserved a little better than that.

I think this one for me ended much lower than expected, really expected it to be in the 6's but ended up 5.7.

....meh. Can't win 'em all.
01/23/2009 12:13:58 PM · #12
Well, i didn't expect much more than that...but a 5 would be ok...

For me it's probably this one. I saved it all month, thinking I easily had a high 5 or low 6. I can see that perhaps the use of a tripod and lower ISO would have added a little more sharpness, but I've gotten great feedback on it elsewhere, and I'm still baffled that it only came in slightly over a 5.

Scored 5.37 and 120th place in the 'Image Grain' challenge.

Strangely enough, it got 5 faves.

Led Zeppelin challenge: I really tried to build this in the flavor of the album cover of "Houses of the Holy"; wild color, mystery, drama. All the voters saw was oversaturated sky. Most missed the humor as well. I was even once instructed that the bridge spoken of in the song was musical, not physical...yeah, SO???

This was from the Color in Black and White challenge. I saw the challenge as being more abstractly relating to color, so I went for an emotive color in black and white. Most people did a literal color in black and white. So I guess I didn't really fit in.

Yeah, Tom, i gave you a 10 on that, def deserves more than 5!! Lighting is intense & dramatic, love the fact that your eyes are hidden. Unfortunately, it doesn't literally speak a color really at all, and so you got hit. Great shot, wrong challenge :/

This one was disappointing to me. I thought it would do much beter. It was in a free study and most of the time I am WAAAYYYY off on picking winners, and determining my final my score.

I wonder if the "hidden due to content" turned off some people. I really don't know why the image has "hidden due to content" on it. She was swimming in a full bathing suit. :o0

Thats a fantastic image njsabs2323! Totally bizarre that it is hidden due to content. A mistake maybe?

I wonder if site SC could remove that...or, I also wonder if they placed it on there?

I really had high hopes for this one. First, I really liked the shot of the hummer in flight, but second, even though I get crucified every time I put text on a picture, I really thought the font selection enhanced the hippy feel I was going for.

I notice the link itself is the one making the "hidden due to content" appear.

The correct link would be:
