I got mine from best buy online a week after ordering it.

Adorama is also accepting orders. I placed an order this monday for the 5D MII + 24-105 kit and it's on its way :)

I placed an order with Berger Brothers, can't wait! :-)

Not to rain on your parades, but I placed an order over a month ago and paid in full....
I still have no camera. Yesterday I was told it may not arrive til....
get this
APRIL!
All that to say is 'placing an order' does translate to having a camera!

I have written 2 emails to canon directly about their production/shipping of these high demand cameras.
I would encourage y' all to do the same.

I ordered from J&R right after Christmas, and just got an email that the camera is due to arrive today (approximately a five week wait). The shipping was free, and there was no markup in price. The place is also very established and reputable.

Which store ? I would cancel the order and buy from another store. Also I will not buy from a store which will charge my credit card in advance. Most of the stores ( B&H, Adorama) specify that they won't charge unless they have the camera.

I just got a call from my local store today that they are getting another shipment on Tuesday. Also today B&H starts accepting pre-orders. Makes me think that the next batch is shipping to the stores now and will be available soon.

that is good news!
hopefully that applies to north of the border too : )

Don't know if any of you noticed by watching NowInStock for the Mark II, but OneCall had them in stock for about 4 hours yesterday. Mine already shipped out and will be here Monday morning by 10:30am!

I do believe this validates my hypothesis about the next batch being shipped on Thursday. As this store is in Seattle, WA, it would make sense for them to get the camera first.

Just a thought...

An excellent alternative to the 5DII for those not wanting the high price tag is the Canon 50D.

It is LOT cheaper and shares some very important features with the 5DII. They are:

1-DIGIC 4 Image processor - That is new and the same one used in the 5DII
2-920K LCD Display - Also the same one used in 5DII... It is about 3-4X better resolution than other LCDs
3-Uses the same menuing system as the 5DII (probably because of the DIGIC 4 image processor)

I bought and own the 5DII. I was researching the purchase of a 40D for my son. There was a sale on a 50D so I decided to cross compare the two cameras. I was impressed enough with the improvements over the 40D that are also in the 5DII that I decided on getting him the 50D instead.

The DIGIC 4 processor is the key item. That is the brains of the camera and that is a big, BIG deal that it is the same as in the 5DII. The 920K LCD resolution makes a huge difference evaluating your images in the field and that is important to.

I haven't read the greatest of things about the 50D. Reviewers tend to agree that fitting 15MP onto an APS-C sized area reduced the image quality and made more problems with noise. From what I read the 40D actually performs better in high ISO situations than the 50D, also the 40D wins in per pixel detail and has better dynamic range in shadows.

Just got my Mark II in today!

Adorama is also taking pre-orders right now. Either that or they have them in stock, they are showing in stock right now, but nowinstock.net says they are pre-orders.

From what I can tell, those reviews are generally right (DPreview), but I upgraded from the Olympus SP-500UZ and I can't be happier with the 50D. I seriously considered purchasing the 40D for the longest time, but the few perks of the 50D sold me on it. I rarely shoot at those extreme ISOs anyway and the difference in per pixel detail and dynamic range in shadows is quite minuscule as far as I have seen.

Trudat.... but seriously... does anyone actually use the video mode for serious applications?

i certainly intend to. it is more than capable enough, and bests many HD camcorders. plus the ability to use swappable lenses is a huge bonus previously limited to the realm of professional video gear.

I havent tried the 40d. But I did try 50d for a few days. It was disappointing for me personally. No matter what the lab tests/specs say, it had so much chrome noise for the same shooting conditions and similar lens as a D90. Perhaps its just me who isnt grown up yet in DSLR world.. but I do know some basics about imaging and 50d I think didnt deliver on what it promises. However, there are people out there who are quite happy with the 50d. Could be the L series lens magic as everyone keeps talking about - that one needs a pro lens to get the best out of 50d. Except for the per pixel sharpness part one could gain from a great lens, I disagree with that logic. An L-series lens cannot make chroma noise from the shadows go away that a decent 2.8 consumer grade lens cant handle, can it? Its debateable.

I have been recommended the 40d.. apparently it is equivalent and/or better than 50d in noise performance.

( Please use my comments for what they are: day-to-day usage experience from a learning amateur.)

I have seen that, and yes, I agree that it is certainly more than capable of producing very great videos. But I guess I'm just wondering if people will actually take advantage of this or if they are still buying a camera for the camera. I am not exactly 100% for the complete integration of all media into one compact form, but do wonder if any of the aspiring photographers on this site are also aspiring cinematographers...

i agree with you up to a point. i am not for integration of functionality any aspect of it has to suffer. but i'm all for it if all pieces of functionality can excel within the same device. its like phones with music players about 4 years ago. there were either good phones, good music players, or crappy phones with crappy music players. the same can be said about still cameras recording video up until a few months ago with canon and nikon dropping their high performance offerings. if canon can get past the size limit of the encoded videos, the performance is already on par with high end HD camcorders, and 32 GB flash drives are already here with 64 gb around the corner (many HD hard drive camcorders have 30 GB HDD's).

as for being an aspiring cinematographer, i'd certainly like to dabble in it but i can't justify buying two sets of equipment, one for my photography hobby and the other to fool around with video editing. this way, i get the best of both worlds... now if it would only show up in stock somewhere :)

Well I'm a happy camper! The big brown truck came by yesterday in the snow storm and left me a 5d Mark II, the battery grip and a 16 gig extreme IV memory card. Now all I need is another battery.
