Well you have every reason to boast, these are fabulous images and as a first time model she's got alot of potential! My fave is the 3rd one it really emphasis her amazing bone structure

Haha, she's a veteran--what I meant is that she was MY first model. Everyone I've shot so far has been friends/family/headshots.

eamurdock--you're spot on in your deduction of two speedlights :D I've got one SB-900 and one SB-600, and depending on the shot I used different light shapers. I have two umbrellas (reflective/shoot-thru), one DIY Turkey Pan Beauty Dish (which worked wonderfully IMO), a really bad DIY ringflash, and various cereal box snoots/flags velcroed onto the flashes. Oh, and a book of rosco gel samples.

If you have any questions on a specific shot I'd be glad to let you know just what's going on setup-wise (or PP-wise...).

Ok, I'll bite - number 5 - the American Apparel looking one.

Also - any that you shot with just one light? I ask because that's what I'm working with...

Haha, American Apparel--very astute. This is a fairly common (and very simple) setup in fashion. It's also a one-light shot--a ringflash. Or rather, a DIY ringflash adapter. Mine was quite poorly constructed so you're not seeing the hallmark circular catchlight there. But you do get the 3-D effect, the shadowy halo, and the overall best look when you put the model up against a colored background.

Lessee, other one light shots...

Hey, wow, it seems most of these shots were one-light setups.

This was one flash off camera left shot into a reflective umbrella.

and
Flash in reflective umbrella off camera right,

Flash in beauty dish directly above (camera lens practically touching the bar of the lightstand to get it as straight down as possible),

You know, I think this one was one light, but now that I think of it, I'm not sure my flash went off for this shot. I trigger my flashes normally with the pop-up flash (yay CLS!) but outside it was very hard to work with because the trigger pulse just kept going in one direction. So I think this was an ISO 400, f/2 1/30 sec shot that I tweaked in RAW.

Thanks for asking!

Ok, that makes sense. I was thinking ringflash, but the lack of circular catchlights threw me. I actually prefer it without, though. Maybe I have to make one of those.

Great job, thanks for sharing!
