I'm often browsing portfolios, and come across a folder or collection that I know is part of a side challenge or GTG or something, but it can be a real pain to find the thread the pictures were posted in. While some people post in the comments the thread a picture may be associated with or something, many do not.

It'd be great if a pictures is posted in a thread to have some way to go from the picture in the portfolio itself to the thread it is linked in.

That's a fine idea; automatic, reverse-engineered linkage for the masses :-)

Ooh, ooh, I think know how to do that. Hmm, maybe I'll actually spend a bit of time on it...

Recent thread with similar suggestion ...

Ok, I wrote a DPCmod for this.

I can tell you that cross-referencing every image with every thread would be a very complex feature for Langdon to implement on the site. However, Google regularly indexes entire websites, and we can leverage their data for this problem.

Unfortunately, we can't simply grab data from Google and create a little list of threads (because of security / cross-site-scripting concerns, though maybe they have an API...)

But what we can do is add a link to the image page. Click it and it opens a new tab with a Google search for the image in the DPC forums. Not a perfect solution, but it does get the job done.

Note that if the image was never used in the forums (or used very recently - like in the past day) there are no results.

Will that search also find other sites where the image has been (illegally) posted? That would make some people very happy ... ;-)

I click on "install" and it gives me a page showing the code...

Yo, smurfy! Looks like you might want to edit the name of that script. Currently you have it as dpcmod_img_thread_search.js, and it installs a little more easily if it's called dpcmod_img_thread_search.user.js.

Looks like Bear discovered the issue as well. You can get around it, Bear. Save the file to your desktop, rename it to dpcmod_img_thread_search.user.js, and then in firefox do a ctrl+O and open that file. That will let you install it now if you don't want to wait for smurfy. :)

Thanks, fixed it. I haven't created a new script in a while. =)

Well there's no magic - it simply searches by IMAGE_ID.jpg. You could simply google for the same, assuming the perpetrator didn't change the filename. =)
