how does this work for you? i found it extremely good

Don't use it anymore once I discover that doing yourself is more satisfying and the colors come out nicer.

Play around with the levels by yourself and you will discover many options.

yes doing it yourself turns out alot better. i think!

use curves. much more control.

although, for snapshot type photos auto-levels is fast and usually works great.

and if you didn't already know...

command-shift-L(mac)
control-shift-L(windows)

Auto-levels works best when you have a "well-populated" histogram to begin with. The ideal shape of the histogram looks like a mountain peak, sloping off evenly on either side. Sometimes you have a nicely shaped histogram but there is space on either side. What auto levels does essentially is move the sliders on either side to compress the image information and remove unneed data, ie. deepen the shadows and lighten the highlights. I'm sure someone else has a more technical answer and can explain it much better.

I've tried using curves b4 & can;t get used it. Can you explain abit how it is used & what it does for your shot?
