I didn't realize how expensive these things can get. Is it truely better quality for higher price on these? I need to get one, but have very limited funds after the holidays. Any experience with the lower end vs. more expensive ones would be helpful in my decision of which kind to buy.

I have 2 hoya ones, which were $189 AUD, pretty good IMO.

I know what you mean. Mine cost about $200- it is a Heliopan slim filter. I use it on my Sigma 10- 20mm lens even though a polarizer can be minimally effective on such a wide angle (the Nikon D80 is a DX or smaller sensor camera so at the widest it is equal to about a 15mm lens). If you are looking to use it for a wide angle you may want to wait until you are sure you will use it enough. You do not say what lens you intend to use it for. The maximim effect of course is at 90 degrees from the sun and a wide angle lens can include more area so the polarizer effect only occurs on part of the frame. More expensive usually means better coatings so you get fewer distortions like flare on them.

There is a difference that you can see in the photos. Save up and get the good one, or a used good one somewhere on line. I have several different sizes, and one of the cheap ones that came with a lens is so bad that you can't even see to focus correctly when it is on the lens. I use it for a lens cap.
If you plan to use it at less than about 20mm, you may get vignetting if you don't get the thin variety. I use one most of the time when outdoors shooting, and for sunsets to help bring out the blue sky above the orange and red clouds.

Neither of the lenses you list in your profile is anywhere near 77mm diameter; got something coming we don't know about?

I have a brand new Canon 72mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter for sale. I can let you have it for less than half price -- $50.00 plus shipping.

I believe my 17-55 takes a 77? Am I mistaken?

Unfortunately, that's above my budget for this at the moment - although it's a good price. I was thinking of something more in the under $50 range. I may just wait until I can afford one like the one you are selling.

You can got the Cokin P-series route, where any filter in the series will work with any lens, as long as you have the $10 adapter ring for that size lens. When I bought my Cokin circular polarizer I think it was $70 - and now works on all my lenses.

Good quality, multi-coated 77mm polarizers pop up regularly on ebay for about $80-85. I got $90 locally for the used one I was selling last week. You might do better by trolling the ads locally, but you also might expend a lot of effort and not find anything.

Judy, I usually get my filters from The Filter Connection . They have lots of products from the usual suspects. I like their prices and their delivery charges are reasonable. Hope it helps.

ETA....my already lame typing skills have vastly declined. Have to see Mavis and soon! LOL!

I have a Polarizer that I no longer use. I don't have the lens that I used it with. I'm not sure of the size. I'll check when I get home and give you a good price on it if it fits your lens.

I bought a Promaster low profile at my local store (Dodd camera) for 98$.

You (may) have paid a lot of money for a great lens. Why put poor quality glass in front of that great lens? In my view, great glass in a filter is at least as important as great glass in a lens. Your photo will only be as good as the poorest glass between you and your subject.

you can also get a step-down ring and use the 77mm on a smaller lens.

Note that CPLs don't work well if you use a wide-angle.

I don't know if this is of any use to you (being an australian site), but I just bought a 77mm PL filter from this mob. It is a Hoya Pro 1 Digital Circular PL (low profile). I don't know much about filters but it seems all right. It was $45 Aus - so if you're in the states, probably works out to about $35 plus postage. For what I've checked -that seems incredibly cheap. Maybe someone else on the site, who knows the difference between filters, might give you an idea where this one sits regarding quality in comparison to the other brands. The place is called CCE Electronics.
CCE filters

Ask around, have a look at the site and see if it is of any use.

For any Australians - the postage was about $8 - so for about $53 - it seemed like a cheap filter. From what I could tell from other sites they are generally a lot more expensive. They are also quick - I received it in about 5 days.

I just bought this one and am going to return it. It has threads on the front but I can't mount my Cokin set up to it, the threads simply wont match up, which is unfortunate. I used to have the blue series Hoya circular polarizer, which was uncoated worked great but has a bad ring that holds the parts together. I have had two break on me in a few years. I will admit I use it all the time and is always attached to my wide angle lens. It works great on super wide angle, unless you shooting all blue skies or a lot of water with reflections as they will be uneven. Look at any shot of mine that is a wide angle landscape and it probably had a CPL on it. They are great for clouds.
