I went to a wedding yesterday and didn't realize until this morning that I didn't have my 70-200mm with me. That woke me up more that 10 cups of coffee every would. Now I'm in a panic. I don't know the group (The cleanup crew from the church) very well, but I'm hoping they have it now and just can't get in touch with me. If it was left at the restaurant, I worry that since it's expensive, they'll play the "Never saw it." card...and I know that's not the best way to judge people you've not met, but when that kinda lens goes missing, BOOM...I'm in PANIC mode.

I bought it with my Visa, and it's been less than a year since purchase. I was wondering if anyone knows about lost good coverage? Do people have this on their visa cards, or does it depend on the Visa card?

I'm still holding out that it's in someones hands from the church because they have service today around 4pm and I'll be able to call the pastor and ask. I need to stitch that sucker to my body when I go out (My physical, human body.)

Depends on the visa. Check your card agreement.

I would think this is more of an insurance issue. Does your insurance policy cover it?

It's always worth a call to ask. Years ago when I was in high school, I dropped a camera off a rollercoaster at Great America---not on purpose of course, but foolish of me all the same. My parents had JUST gotten it a couple months before for my birthday, and they had bought it with a VISA. When Great America mailed me the package of my *very* broken little camera, they called VISA and explained very honestly what had happened. Because it had been purchased with the card, it was essentially under "warranty" from VISA. They sent a form, we filled it out, and I got a replacement camera.

Glad you got it back. And also to see good people out there to return it.

You really need to insure your equipment. Although the "Holy Shit" where is my "insert piece of equipment here" will still be there, the panic about how am I going to buy another one for my next job, wont be.

I'm glad you got your lens back, but you really owe it to yourself not to be asking the question will Visa help me replace something I lost in the future, by knowing its insured.

Even if I'm not a pro photographer? As in I don't normally do weddings...I'm usually the minister, but this friends wedding was done by his minister and asked if I could do the photos (They were on a low budget, although after seeing the results of the day decided they wanted me to make an album, so I will be making some money to put towards more gear *hopes for studio lights*. My price list is up at the local churches and I get calls but I usually work and pass it on to a fellow photographer instead.

You only need insurance on your eqiupment if you can easily afford to replace it on your own in the case of any type of accident. Loss, damage, water, or whatever. I didnt say you needed business insurance, but you do need gear insurance, put a rider on your homeowners, get a separate policy, whatever you need to do in order to cover yourself in case of an accident, loss, fire, or whatever. If you had a fire at your house would you want the portion of your money to cover personal belongings to have to replace your gear? I'm not being a PITA I'm simply trying to let you know that coverage is there, and very affordable too. Just something to think about.

heavyj--I'm by no means a pro, but I have my equipment insured! We basically added a separate rider to our homeowner's insurance. It was super affordable, and now if anything happens to it, I don't have to worry about replacing it all. It's taken me years to obtain my "collection" and there's no way on earth I could replace it all if it were stolen or lost. So, depending on how much gear you've got, it's completely worth it!!

I have my equipment covered with an umbrella policy with State Farm. The amount spent on insurance since 2004 already paid for itself when I accidently dropped a $500 lens and cracked it.

OK...it looks like I have to look into insurance.

Now the problem is...where to go in Japan to get my gear insured.
