I upgraded from 20D to 50D and In Live view mode, when I do half press, it does not do focusing but when I click on AF-ON then it focuses, is this something new with 50D?

Thanks for all your help!

I just got my 50D last weekend, also upgrading from 20D. Noticed the same thing, it took me a while to figure out that you are supposed to focus by clicking AF-ON button. The manual is a bit confusing on the Live view mode. Anyhow I do not think I will ever use it (Live view mode), I think that this is one functionally I really do not need.
Anyone has any feedback on the 50D to share ?

What you're describing is how it works on the 40D as well. For some reason I thought the 50D had a different focusing system in live view or at least some feature that is different from the 40D. There may be a custom function that you need to set if you want the half-press to do the focusing for your. Either that or I'm completely off base.

Google is your friend.

I almost never use the Live View Mode. So far I think I've only used it twice when I had the camera in a position where I was unable to look through the viewfinder so I had to hit the Live View Button just to make sure I was framed up. I love my 50D!

you can somehow in the menu change this feature.
I cannot remember how exactly but it is changeable.

In the menu under "Live View function settings," you can change the AF mode between Quick mode (Live View will be momentarily interrupted), Live mode (focuses while viewing Live View), and Live 'L' Mode (face detection). All of the AF settings are used with the AF-ON button. I've looked through the manual and menu but I did not find anything suggesting that this button could be changed to the half-press for Live View AF.
