You know that lenses from your Maxxum 5 will only fit Minolta/Sony DSLRs, don't you?

If you only have a couple of basic lenses, that should not be an issue, but if you already big investment in glass, then that is something to consider.

I only have the one that came with it so I'm not too worried about that. Probably gonna sell it when get a new camera anyway.

I disagree. For $300, he can get a 10MP D60, or a 6MP D70. If he's serious, he'll outgrow the D60's capabilities in about a week. The D70, even though it's older and doesn't have as many megapixels, has a lot more features and flexibility, and he won't outgrow it as fast.

I just don't understand why he would want to buy a Nikon.

I'm not necessarily stuck on buying a Nikon. It's just that of the ones I researched so for it looks like a good camera. I will be stopping into best buy today and a local camera store over the weekend to play with a few. I'm not the kind of guy that will jump into something without plenty of research and I'm not in a rush to have one, but when I feel comfortable purchasing one I will.

this might have been a tongue-in-cheek post, but then it does hold water.
he could have easily opted for those 350D/400D which goes really cheap now and i do believe they have superior sensors than the nikons of the same category, D70 included.

It was sorta tongue-in-cheek/serious comment because it was what I was thinking while I was looking at used Rebels like the Xsi which is 10mp at B&H for $369.
