I think the good starting point was raised early in this post (and seemingly ignored)

Give Palestinians back the land that was stolen.. There is no Palestine yet we have Palestinians... does not compute.

The land stolen in 1948, or the land stolen in 1967?

Back OT, the absence of international journalists in this conflict has been outrageous. No-one should lose sight of the fact that both sides are waging a media and propaganda war that has few rules.

With the restricted media coverage, it's a good indication of how dire things must be in Gaza if Israel are being criticized by the ICRC (who usually remain as neutral as possible)

//news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7817926.stm

"One medical team found 12 bodies in a shelled house, and alongside them four very young children, too weak to stand, waiting by their dead mothers, the ICRC said.

Aid workers had been denied access to the site for days, it added.

"This is a shocking incident," Pierre Wettach, ICRC head for Israel and the Palestinian territories said in a statement.

"The Israeli military must have been aware of the situation but did not assist the wounded. Neither did they make it possible for us or the Palestinian Red Crescent to assist the wounded."

Correspondents say the criticism is unusually strong, coming from an agency considered to be neutral. "

As I said before, Israel pre-dates Palestine.

Then you would have Israelis with no Israel.

Really? Stolen?

The Jews would have been more than happy to comply with UNSCOP, but it was the Arabs and Palestinians that declared war and initiated hostilities in 1948.

Following on from the 1947/48 civil war, in which the Zionist group Irgun bombed civilians, followed by retaliation by an angry mob of Arabs who killed 39 Jews, followed by the Lehi (Jewish) bombing a civilian train .. etc... ad nauseum.

We could keep tracing the cause of the series of wars back through the mists of time until we're waving bible verses at each other. The fact is that the Arabs/Palestinians and the Jews have hated each other from the get-go, there was never a period of time where they lived peacefully in perfect harmony.

To imply that the Jews have been compliantly and peacefully sitting on their bit of land gifted to them by 'god', while fending off Arab aggression for the past 50 years is rich.

Hmmm. The way I see it is that the Syrians, Egyptians and Jordanians gambled in the 1967 war and lost. Israel won the rights to that land.

No, Jews have been living there for 3000 years give or take a century or two.

No, they lost the land to the Babylonians in 586BC. Does that mean Israel belongs to Iraq? - How far back do you want to go?

They're too busy playing to the media to listen.

Israel unilaterally dismantled Jewish settlements, withdrew its military, and basically "gave back" Gaza a couple of years ago. However, since Hamas policy calls for the destruction of Israel, obviously this was not enough ... if Israel were to withdraw in the West Bank to the "Green Line" (pre-1967 borders), it would put Palestinian rockets within shooting distance of Jersalem, Tel Aviv, and the only major airport. Given the predeliction of the Palestinians to shoot rockets at and to dispatch suicide bombers to Israel regardless of any state of truce, that seems like a strategically inappropriate approach.

If someone has repeatedly threatened to kill you, do you invite them to move next door, or get a restraining order?

I tell u, if you negotiate with Hamas, give back the land pre 1967, there would be a lasting deal. You have to give hope.

I would like to see your family born into such a dire life of misery and suffering. Imagine that. All people deserve a life of opportunity and a future, dont they? Israel condemns all Palestinians

Ahh, life of a PJ on the Gaza Strip!

See pic, here's the text:

Gilkey's lens is seen here after being pierced with what he assumes to have been a rubber bullet though he says it's hard to know for sure while he was covering the Gaza conflict from Israel.

That's some nice bokeh he's got in that shot :P Lucky that wasn't his head.
ETA: too bad he didn't enter that in the lucky challenge... or would that be unlucky?

Negotiations are ongoing, and have been for a couple of days at least (mediated by France and Egypt).

What does it say that Hamas is only willing to negotiate a "truce" but not a "treaty"?

But instead Israel controls most of their day to day lives in Gaza, right down to food, aid, fuel and energy. The settlers get first use. It's not just weapons the Palestinians smuggle into Gaza it's the necessities of life as well. Gaza has pretty much become an Israeli concentration camp and of course, oppressed people will not always be quiet.

EDIT: Edit to add, no idea what the answer will be to all this and as history shows, it will probably never be solved. Sad for both sides.

The UN security council has finally passed a ceasefire resolution, by a vote of 14/15.

Guess who abstained?
