APAW - "Archive Photo a Week - Go through your photo archive, and find a photo that you have not yet processed, and process it! Turn that diamond in the rough into a gem that you can post here for comment, as well as print or resell. Note: you may post a copy of your unpolished photo at the start of your week, and get some advice--then post the polished one!)"

A Few Rules

1) One a week
2) Photos not eligible for any current challenge (best of 2008 excluded)
3) Please take time to look at others photos, and comment
4) If you are a member, it would be helpful to create a single gallery with your images from this side challenge. Then members can easily browse the gallery without returning to this thread in between each. As I see the galleries, I'll also add links to them beside your names below.

This seemed to provide an appropriate first topic ... :-)
... from January, 2004.

Edited: 752555.jpg Resized Original: 752556.jpg

BTW: Most of these oldies will be shot with my vintage year-2000 Olympus D490Z P&S -- 2MP/3x zoom ... a camera I still use almost every day.

I didn't post an original since I really didn't do anything to this except add clarity in Topaz. If you have suggestions, they'd be appreciated.

OK, following some suggestions...

This was taken in December 2001, using my Fujifilm DX10, my first digital camera. I have adjusted levels and sharpened slightly:

752565.jpg

1031.gif Generale suggested perhaps a crop would work better. Only having limited pixels to work with, here is a cropped version.

Took this in July 08. Loved the picture then, but did the re-edit this afternoon. I didnt know how to do any RAW processing at the time, and since have learned a bunch.

Hope you like Speedy the Snail.

This is the original I'll work on. I want to do it in B&W and try to get a feeling of depth - hard to describe, exactly, but I know it when I see it, and I rarely get it from my own work. :-) I'll post the edited one when I get it edited.

Neil, my folder is here.

I suspect most of my archive selections will be shots I want to process for personal reasons - family, friends, etc - so don't expect marketable end products. :-)

Not quite what I'd planned, and Kelli, I was uploading these when I saw yours - great minds think alike! :-)

Two Three versions - do you prefer one over the other(s)? Added the B&W based on a comment from 21.gif SteveJ

752607.jpg 752609.jpg 752632.jpg

Also, using shadows/highlights tends to give me a problem with halos from time to time, even if I temper the amounts I use. Is this inevitable?

Just a quick note, sometimes in order for me to offer advice (not that I'm any good at it) I need to actually play with your photo. I will always post them in my "other people's stuff" folder and label them with your name and let you know. If you'd prefer that I not do that, could you please send me a pm and let me know. And on that note, you all have my permission to play with any of my photo's. Thanks!!

753127.jpg.....Here's my first original - you'll probably see a lot of bugs - I want to make this dragonfly pop out of the fairly bland background....

and thanks 21_F.gif Kelli I'll do the same and everyone else can go for their lives with mine

Edit No.1...

Here's the one I'll be working on this first week. It was shot late at night on a lakefront, with strong artificial lighting coming from the side. Not sure if I can get the colors to work with me or not. I'll probably do it in b/w, but I'm open to suggestions.

Here's my first week pic. This was taken 1/3/2008 and never processed from the raw...

752645.jpg

I did a little to it, mostly cloning out some of the muck on the ground.

My first week picture is below.
It's not really a "gem", I just saw it while browsing my collection. I submitted this image because I don't have much time this week to go through my archive, find a good image, and process it. I promise that next week's image will be better. Whatever.

752712.jpg This is the origional shot of a strawberry moon I shot back in 6/2005, Didnt really have any post processing skills back then and it was really blurry and had many dust spots and distractions to it.

This is the newly post processed image, hopefully not my best gem that we find this week, but I thought the processing was good.

I'm not totally following the rules but this challenge gave me a great opportunity to edit something I did for a challenge a couple of years ago. This edit is far from perfect but it does allow me to see that I've learned quite a bit from DPC :)

I'm going back to May 2004 (sorry!) so that means 10D and JPG at least till August. <g> For animal fans only, really. There will be gems along the way but this one is just to set the stage, how could I leave out her birthday?

Here's my Week 1... this is in essence an "outtake" for my "Nature's Palette" picture (though it was never used in a challenge--I don't know why I didn't think to use it in Best of 2007!) It's mainly an outtake to a master for a print I am selling now as a print or canvas in my online galleries.

This one has a nice wide perspective which I like. However, I am not sure about the viewing area on the bottom right. Does it ruin the pic? And how's the processing here, compared to my original "Nature's Palette", or the reworked canvas version? (Links are in the pic description.)

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I don't think editing rules apply at all for side challenges. Anything goes, IMO, for whatever it's worth. I'd like to see your 4-up.

Yep, no editing rules whatsoever--other than copyright type rules (you are editing an image You own rights to).

Not sure if I am out of place here, but I have a suggestion.

This thread is going to get incredibly long by then end of the year. Any chance we could have a separate thread each week? I would find that easier to keep track of when photos were taken, and which ones to comment on.

If this creates a bunch of work for someone though, I will just shut up :)

That wouldn't be a lot of work, but it's probably impractical anyway, because we all will have different start/end of weeks, so people will be confused where to post. In any case, if you want to mark where you are, just post to the thread!

Also, I've encouraged people to put all the photos in one gallery in their profile. I should have added that it's helpful to include any questions discussion in the image description--since that way, you can read it, comment on the image, and then go directly to the next image in their gallery if you are behind in your commenting.

ETA: One thing worth mentioning--do you all know that we're not limited to 640/720 in our portfolios? So if you want us to see a bit more detail, feel free to use a bit larger size!) In fact, that's what I did: just click the "View full-sized image" in the image details area for a larger view. (Obviously, for image theft reasons, you won't want to actually post the full sized image, just as large as you think important)

definitely not a gem but it has some nice lines. and it's an Edsel! :-)

Posters are a subject which often attracts my interest, I have many pictures of them, on film, transparencies, & digital.
It is a two dimensional subject and somewhat difficult to work with. I consider images of posters a form of
documentary street photography. There are few examples on dpc.

One which I especially like is this one

Here is a little mini series from Mexico City from 1978:

Took this on Daydream Island whilst on vacation in 2007 - I've always wanted to have a reason to process it - but it never seemed to 'fit'.

I've actually been finding 720 is a good size for the web, and I've been postng my Flickr images at the same size. There are some really detailed images that deserve a lot more size though, and don't have the same impact at a smaller size.

I do think if someone requests editing help, they should post a larger one to provide more to work with.
