Is this the Owl moth? The pic I could find on this beauty has the 'eye' on the upper wing....

Good question...We have this butterfly exhibit here in Cleveland and if I remember correctly it seemed that several of the butterfly's had this, or similar, type of design on the underside of their wings...Anybody a butterfly expert?

Owl Butterfly. The wings are bright blue when open I believe.

Antennae peg it as a butterfly. Probably the Owl Butterfly. Richard Seaman shot of same insect:

That's the Blue Morpho which looks similar to the Owl when closed, but has more eyes.

The OP is indeed an Owl Butterfly.

Thank you so much, this monster butterfly is really big, impressively so. I just had to know and with your help it was easy to google and find.

Real name is the Giant Owl Butterfly (Caligo Eurilochus). I found this one in South Africa.... strange as it is suppose to a 'Mexico to North American' species.

Butterflies rest with their wings closed, and moths with their wings open.

That's not always true, but sounds like a pretty good base to start with in most cases.
