Darn the luck! My husband has a cruise conference in Hawaii in Feb. I HAVE to go! (LOL) I have a Nikon D70 (old I know) a 50mm lens, the kit lens, and a 70-200 lens. I would like to buy a compact camera to take when I don't want to lug all my stuff around. Does anyone have a recommendation for me. I know I would like some wide shots of the beach but I would like a decent optical zoom to play with.

I have a Canon G9 that I am very pleased with. Great small camera to take along everywhere a larger camera would stand out :)

Olympus and (I think) Panasonic have relatively inexpensive (around $300) P&S models which are waterproof down to 10 feet or so ... in Hawaii you will probably have a chance to go snorkeling and might want to take some underwater shots, or at least it'd nice to not have to worry about rain or sea spray.

If you have any interest in getting another lens instead of another camera, try the Nikon 18-200 VR II. I gave it a good workout on our cruise last week, and I only changed the lens 1 time the whole trip (to take some super wide angle shots of the ship). It was nice to simply take that lens along, instead of bringing a bunch of stuff.

We're doing the Hawaii cruise in April '10... can't wait (I'm excited that I can now say we're going to Hawaii "next year!").

Take a look at this one:

Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Lumix 9.1 Megapixel

Do a google search or pricegrabber.com. A friend of mine didn't want to take her Canon DSLR and lenses to Europe for a 2 week trip and settled on this one. She got some really amazing images. 10x optical zoom is key here. You should get one for less than $300. It's a nice option for carrying around anytime.

Get the panasonic lx3 compact camera. It's got a 24mm ultra wide angle leica lens. Quality is superb also.

Too bad you have to go to Hawaii. Oh well, might as well make the best of it. I use an Olympus SW 725 and it works quite well for lightweight shooting in any weather and in the ocean. The SW series is quite good and durable which is a potential necessity in Hawaii in February. If you come to port in Kaua'i stop and say hello.
