Hello guys, have been looking at the site for a couple of weeks and gotta say I love the quality of the work here.

It's a bit daunting for me really... got my first D-SLR recently so have only been taking pics for a couple of months, nothing up to the quality of the challenges yet though. Hopefully with a bit of practice...

I'm also a bit confused by the site at times... there seem to be a vast amount of challenges ongoing at any one time... members challenges and open challenges. I suspect that as I'm not a "paid" member of the site I can only enter the open challenges, and that also explains why I can't vote on anything?

I look forward to learning how to use my camera... I refuse to use any of the scene modes and have been sticking to A / S / M modes so far, with poor results so far, but I guess that's the learning curve :-)

Hopefully it won't be long before I'm confident to enter a shot in one of the challenges!

Take care,

LadyStarstruck

Welcome, I just joined here recently. I've already found challenges are a great way to stretch my photography!

With regards to the modes in the camera, use whichever suits the situation best! Don't get drawn into that 'I should always use manual to be a better photographer' mindset. Just don't ignore the other functions at the same time! You'll eventually find settings that suit you. I find I take around 95% of my shots in aperture priority because I want control over the depth of field, and let the camera do the exposure calculations, works for me!

Welcome :)

Have a look at the Side Challenges if you don't feel like entering the main challenges, but you will need to be a paid member to have space on dpc so you can get feedback on your images.

My advice about challenges is just to enter, you can learn so much from others comments

Also take a look at the basic tutorials as a few little tweaks in photoshop or whatever editing software you use can really improve your photo

Don't let inexperience stop you from entering. That's how you learn. I've been here for two years and I can see a dramatic difference in the overall quality of my images now vs. when I started.

Welcome aboard. Wear your thickest skin in the challenges, but outside of the "ring", this is a pretty friendly forum, and you can learn a lot here.

Welcome to DPC.....
There are alot of helpful people on here....
One thing I did when I was trying to learn my camera (and am still trying to learn!)...was to shoot a pic in one of the scene modes....and then replicate the shot in M,A or S....this has helped me learn the outcomes of the settings

Thanks for the welcome... just figured out I can vote on the open challenges. I like the way after voting through a whole bunch, you then get an overview of pics and scores and can adjust them. Really like the way that is implemented.

Hi,

I am new here as well. I have entered three challenges so far, and it is good. I has really given me desire to take some pictures I wouldn't have otherwise done. It will push your skills, and help you learn.

Don't worry too much about the scores, just have fun with the pictures, and learn from what people say, and the other pictures people took.
