| Can someone tell me how to do this? |

| I did this before but it wasn't easy. Basically get a program that records sounds played by your computer, then let the songs play in iTunes while the aforementioned program records it and saves it as mp3. It's a pain the ass and time consuming, but at least the final quality is excellent. If anyone has a better method please share. BTW I hope this thread doesn't get closed due to any illegal-ness :( |

I gave up just the other day and bought a converter program for exactly that.
Couldn't manage to find a free one in time for converting a Christmas present :-(
The one I bought is called "Protected Music Converter", but there are tons of them out there.

| The simplest way: burn a CD, then rip the songs from that back into MP3 format in iTunes. |

Certainly the easiest way. That's what I did until Amazon started selling DRM-free MP3's. I think ITunes limits you to 5 burns of any playlist, but all you have to do then is change the playlist a little. |

That's exactly the way I do it as well.. I then re-import the songs in a high bit rate format and remove the itunes songs from my playlist, but not delete them from my computer.

| Anyone interested in an alternative to ITunes may want to give Songbird a spin. It's a free, open-source application that works with other players. It is based on the Firefox browsing engine, and like Firefox, has extensions that add to it's functionality. It's been in beta for a couple of years and hit full release just recently. I'm liking what I see. |

| you can use a free edit program like audacity. Open the song then save it as a .mp3 or save it as a .wav if you want to burn it for a cd.. |

audacity is a pretty cool program - kind of a complicated interface though.
