I just want to share this...

Why Read a Photograph?

- To find out more than a first glance will give.

- There is more in a photograph than first meets the eye.

A photograph can be compared to a deep drawer-the things on top only might let us know what is hidden below.

- At first glance a photograph can inform us.

- At second glance it can reach us.

As we stare at it, a great deal more can happen to us, we can lose ourselves in it, it can be an experience to us, an engrossing
experience; one that may be serious or so deep that we are not sure what it means; or jolly and yet we are not able to say why we laugh.

And this is why I think we ought to read photographs
.

These words by Minor White are pure effin' photographic gospel.

Oh Art, this is just so embarrassing – I haven't got anything for you!
Try this:

It's the best I can do on short notice, and it at least has a vaguely Christmassy kinda feel.
Plus it's Lensbaby image, so it might get this thread back on track after my rude interruption.

Still practicing...

I guess I should try changing out the aperture ring for some variety.

I have become so besotted with using my LB Original wide open (i.e. no ring installed at all) that I'm no longer even sure where my aperture rings are. Wide open is great fun, and wildly unpredictable too. It's a lot harder to be certain of the focus ... a drawback that I try to turn into a virtue. The danger of LB wide open, if the reactions of my friends (yes I have a couple, Art) and family are any indication, is that all your images look the same. I don't mind that; it disguises their other shortcomings (the images, not the friends and family).

P.S. I think it would be very useful if the participants in this side challenge made sure to include the aperture used in the photograph information, With Lensbaby being capable of producing such different effects at different apertures, it would be instructive to know what was done with what.

I think ALL images should have ALL the shooting settings -- especially those in side challenges and double especially where people are asking for a critique. But that's just me...

I will try, but I find when I go out with a LB, I frequently switch out the rings (for curiosity's sake, more than anything else, to see what I will get) - then when I get home I forget which is a 2 (no ring), a 2.8, a 4, etc.; the smaller apertures are easier to distinguish, but still...

geez, with the composer, now I'll be switching out the optics, too! Hopefully that will be more obvious which is which...

Too bad it doesn't work on friends and family as well. Or better yet, coworkers. Well, not all of them.

Was hoping against hope that my replacement LB would show up today, as I now have four days of no work and four days of predicted decent light. But alas, it shall be a LB-less Xmas for me. Any one have suggestions for other things I can try? I'd like to play with my flash but currently have no way of getting it off the camera. I suppose I need a cord or a trigger, yes? Even so, it would still be handheld... :-)

In preparation for the upcoming challenge, I chose the Lensbaby to photograph this year's Christmas cards. Happy Holidays to all. Looking forward to January!

My muse and macro kit arrived yesterday. Took some shots and then today found there are apertures included....so few instructions with this. That can be good, I hope. I'll throw some stuff up when I get home tomorrow. Fun!

I got my composer last week, and just got the email that my accessory kit is in the mail, hopefully arriving early next week! Here are my first attempts:

I'm doing the same thing. So far I've only tried a handful of shots with smaller apertures. The 3G is a double-glass optic, and it's actually pretty sharp across the image field when stopped down, just a trace of corner blur at f:8, haven't even TRIED anything smaller. I'm loving the way it works wide open. Plus, I busted my left pinkie and I'm having a HECK of a time opening the damned container with the aperture discs in it. Plus I'm using the wide-angle attachment mostly, so to change apertures I have to:

1. Locate the accessory lens caps.
2. Unscrew, cap, and store the WA lens.
3. Uncap the discs.
4. Locate the one I want.
5. Remove the current disk.
6. Pack that away.
7. Install the new disk.
8. Screw the WA adaptor back on.

It's a CHORE...!

Play with bouncing the flash. Bounce it off ceilings, walls left and right, even walls behind you. That'll use up some time :-)

And you have to rub in that you have the wide angle attachment, in addition to physically having a Lensbaby in your hands. Hmmmph!

Yeah, but mine is USED, and not the current generation that lets you switch optics at will, so yours is worth waiting for :-)

OK - so I'm jealous that I seem to be the only DPC'er without a Lensbaby (and a woodie)!! :)

Lots on new Lensbaby owners here now, so maybe it would be good inspiration to see the work of an expert at using the lens.

Here is Susan Robertson.

(I could also link to the website of the OP, but she'd hit me with the stinkeye for embarrassing her ... but do have a look ... just remember, you didn't get the link from me)

RKT *is* rather good at this photography stuff, isn't she? And she has a fine, fine grasp of the nuances of Lensbaby :-) I shall study at her feet...
