That's right, snow, for the last couple of hours.

It's not a blizzard but it's not just flurries either. Don't know if it will stick to the ground, already pretty wet from rain earlier.

Just thought you'd like to know ;-)

I'm not intentionally hijacking your thread. Well, a little bit, but i couldn't resist.

Long story short, my company has just opened up 25 positions around Texas, and I've been some thought into applying. It wouldn't be a promotion or anything, but as our business is growing there, it may lead to more opportunity down the road. Much more so than here in FL, anyway.

Beyond that, it's an opportunity to get out and try something different, see something different, etc. I don't personally know a single solitary soul in the whole state, but I managed that when I moved to Florida, and that's been an unbelievable 9 years ago. (time flies!)

I guess mainly I'm just looking for the inside scoop from those of you who live there. What do you like, what don't you like, etc. My options would be Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. My first choices based on the little bit that i know are Austin or San Antonio, but I'm certainly open to suggestions.

Feel free to PM me if you would like. I would really love some insider opinions!

Thank you, and now back to your previously scheduled thread! :-)

Depends on what you're looking for. I've lived in Houston, Austin and Dallas.

Dallas was my least favorite, but that was a long time ago. But they do still have the Cowboys, so you'd have to deal with that ;-)

Houston has the most diversity. That may be good or bad depending on your preferences, but it does make for some great restaurants!

Austin is good, but it has grown a lot over the last 10-15 years. Good music scene.

Houston is the 4th largest city in the US. Good music, good restaurants, lots of entertainment options. But you could say that about the other sites too.

San Antonio is a bit different than the others. Very large hispanic community, more so that the others. Not a bad thing by any means, just something that sets it apart. Big military town too. Several military bases in San Antonio. The traffic seems worse in San Antonio than the other cities, but all can have some serious traffic issues.

All 4 get very hot in the summer, mild winters. Dallas gets the coldest usually.

San Antonio and Austin are better for photo ops without a lot of driving that Houston or Dallas. SA and Austin are near the Texas Hill County. Some places around there are beautiful certain times of year.

If you like the big city, Houston and Dallas are your best bets. Same if you are a major league sports fan. Houston and Dallas has NFL. MLB and NBA. San Antonio has the NBA Spurs. Austin has the University of Texas, an awesome sports program across the board, but all at the collegiate level. Austin is also the state capitol, if that means anything to you.

You can't really go wrong in any of them. Having lived in 3 of the 4, I prefer Houston. I am sure you can get the same opinion about any of the other 3 cities from other people.

Thank you! One of the big draws that I see for Austin is definitely the music scene! I would love to live in a town that actually has one! lol Dallas I'm not so interested in, and I'm not really sure why. lol As for what I've seen online, either of the other three would have some advantages. Closer to the ocean, closer to the hills, etc. Any would offer me something completely different from Iowa where I grew up, and Florida where i live now. I think that might be the biggest thing pushing me to go. Something "different."

how big of an issue would be that I don't speak Spanish? Fl has quite a hispanic population as well, but it really hasn't caused me any problems. Do I need to look into Rosetta Stone? lol

Ask most anyone in the state, and they'll tell you to come to Austin. But most of that is based on nostalgia, and remembering when Austin was still a small college town. I'm sad to say that it's rapidly turning into a big city and losing a lot of what makes it special. It's still a great place, but i liked the mid-cities area of DFW (Dallas - Fort Worth) just as much. The live music scene is still going strong, and we've got some great folks, it just isn't the same town it was 15 years ago.

Coming up from Florida, i guess i don't need to prepare you for the weather. We have 2.5 seasons - warm and damp, hot and humid, and the 10 days of cold weather that we get in Jan/Feb (apparently it got confused this year).

Personally, i'd avoid San Antonio and Houston, though the cost of living will be less in either of those places, at least close in. You shouldn't need Spanish here any more than you'd need it in Florida. Dallas and Fort Worth, while close logistically, might as well be on opposite sides of the states politically and culturally. It's an interesting phenomenon.

Austin is an oasis of liberalism in the middle of a conservative state, if that matters to you.

Spanish is helpful at times, more so in San Antonio than the others, but by no means required.

In Houston you'll find Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, communities where the street signs are in 2 languages.

Dallas isn't bad, just not my favorite based on living there 20 years ago.

All will have good music scenes. Houston has some great concert venues, blues and lazz clubs.

Houston wins the humidity contest. Probably close to what you get in southern Florida.

All the 4 cites have great real estate values compared to other major cities in the US. $250,000 will buy you a great house in Houston. You can get starter homes in good areas in the low $100,000s.

The politics in the state can be very conservative. A truly "red" state. We do have pockets of liberalism, particularly Austin and Houston. But make no mistake, Texas is a Republican stronghold. If any of that matters.

The public schools are a mixed bag. The bigger sities struggle more than the smaller ones. A lot depends on the neighborhood even within the same schoool district. Good resonably priced private schools, some unreasonably priced schools as well.

You wouldn't say that if you were looking at ten inches over the weekend and thats just the start of the season.

*blink*

No, certainly not. If i got ten inches in a weekend (i'd be really, really happy. Oh, wait, different subject...), i wouldn't make the statement that we only get an inch every 10 years. That would just be silly.
