A 10:1 vote:comment ratio usually indicates a great shot or one with a major flaw - guess which of the two mine is?

Here's a clue. This is what I put in the details before voting started:

Well, it's not how I thought it was going to come out - something is not quite right about this - I can't put my finger on it though.

The problem isn't having an emotional attachment, it lies with having too much of an emotional attachment to the point where you simply cannot look at it objectively, refuse to accept critique, only listen to people that like it, and whine that it didn't do well.

That happens far, far too often here.

If you're shooting for yourself, displaying your work on your own walls and your own desk (or relatives, or friends, or clients that have paid for it and enjoy it), then emotionally you can be as attached as you want. If you're putting it up in a *contest*, where it is entirely up for subjective and objective critique, then you'd better be prepared to detach yourself enough to not take anything that is said about it in any way personally and/or allow yourself to realize that it probably isn't as good as you think it is.

That's all.

You both have good points JDubsgirl and K10Guy. I am not emotionally attached to my current entry, just didn't think it was worth a 5.0! :)
It's going up a little to a 5.2 and has 1 fav, so someone likes it, bless her heart! :)

Well, my response to you was more on a community level than a direct response to you specifically ;)

I would just add that photography is so diverse in style, content, and intent that you must balance that when evaluating a score, comment, commenter. There are technically superb razzle-dazzle shots, grainy street photography shots, pristine landscapes, etc etc etc. In a Free Study you have all of these in the mix. If you really want to "Score" or "Win" then you have to study those image styles that tend to be most popular. If you want to participate, learn, show your work and get feedback for your own growth, the scores don't matter much--useful comments on how the image might be improved, or comments that show you that you, indeed, did reach a viewer in the intended way are worth more than any score.

If you decide why you want to enter a challenge, what your desired outcome really is, then you will be much more tolerant of your scores: either you do need to improve to win, or you are happy to have a few hundred folks view and consider your image, cast a vote, and those precious few who will offer comments.

For me, this site offers so much more than the challenges--and the challenges are just a great "virtual" group activity. I do love clicking Update and watching that score, don't get me wrong.... GREAT FUN.

****DITTO on the generic, non-specific "you" disclaimer :-)

i guess the people just came from the master's challenge and were totally unimpressed with mine.

Not complaining about 6.08, its just always weird to see it drop .7 points in a matter of 30 some votes.

I saw those low votes come in just now btw... I know who you are...

eta: Not directing above statement to anyone in this thread. Unless you're the one doing it. In which case I'd know and wouldn't have needed to clarify, would I? o.O

K10Dguy - Gin and tonic works also, but I hear Kat pouring already. And to think that I just ran out of Knob Creek...
