I picked up a set of lowel tota lights from an estate sale today for $150. Does anyone use lights like these?

I'm not sure what your asking. Its a used set of 7 tota lights with stands and almost everything else for them. Only one umbrella though and I'm afraid they get to hot to use my normal umbrellas. I think they are 120v 550w-FHM bulbs. Only 4 stands but hangers and plenty of ways to hang all 7 lights.

So they are the 550w, open face (no fresnel lens), with an spot flood. Barn door accessories, scrims?

If this is the light, you got a way, way, excellent deal. Nice find.

4 sets of barn doors a stack of scrims and some chrome reflectors and some stuff I haven't figured out yet. No spot flood. Can you find me a photo of one?

I also got a cabinet that is for large hand made art paper. Its wooden and has 8 large drawers. I got it for $150 as well.

It was kind of funny. It was after 4pm yesterday, I have been looking for a formal dinning table at estate sales. I picked up a paper and found this sale that was on my way home and it was open till 5(they almost never stay open that long). Then I saw "photograhpy lighting" in the discription. I was loading up by 5.

Are they the flattish looking lamp, say 6"x 2" ?

FHM bulbs is a double ended, long, thin bulb. Cousin to the FCM bulbs, which are the worst made bulbs in the world IMHO.

Just a bit of advice, make sure to use the provided safety screen for you lights, if you have them.

FCM and I am thinking FHM globes have a tendency to burn out. Sometimes those burn outs result in a catastrophic, explosive failure. The safety screen will help keep any molten glass from burning you, your equipment, your house.

Still a nice find.

It came with out any screens. I don't think you really need them. Well as long as you never use them bare bulb. I think there are enough filter holders to use some type of difusion on every light. I think they might be 1000 watt. On second thought if you had a like a hair light over someone a safety screen might be in order.

Famous last words.

I'm telling you, with my background, and experience in using these lamps, and knowing what these globes do, going to the hardware store, purchasing even some small gadge (sp) chicken wire will help if a FHM decides to explode.

Hope you have fire insurance.

Have you used them with regular umbrellas? How does the light come threw the safety screen? It seems like it might difuse the light perfectly?

Umbrellas, no. Other aspects that simulate an umbrella, yes.

Safety screen is just that, it is large enough gadge (sp) that it doesn't effect the light much.

How in the hell do you spell gadge, gagde, gayge,????

Those bulbs do explode. I have had a couple of them blow up, All of the exposed bulb lamps have custom screens over the bulbs but even with the screens I had little chunks of glass all over the place. I have heard stories about umbrellas and softboxes catching fire when this happens but I haven't seen it myself.
