Might want to repost who the "group" is, i was last posted up a while ago. Any additions? Like me for example? I'm OK with it if not, BTW, just don't know if I'm involved or not :-)

Hotpixel hasn't been around so probably hasn't had a chance to update the list lately.

If your image is up for discussion, then I would take it to mean you can't join in the discussion to defend it or explain it. If you do, then the discussion would be about you rather than your photo.

What happened to using these random choices from the freestudy?

To get this show on the road why don't we just start at the top and work our way down. The first image up would be the one in 115th place in the free study.

Any objections?

Are we doing 10 now? I was under the impression we were doing 3. If were doing 3, lets just grab the 3 closest to first / middle / last. and do one at a time!

The group will then pick a minimum of 3 of these images and try to evaluate it here in the thread and this will be how we form our discussion of each photo to better understand them. We can also talk about the actual latest challenges in the entry process to make more people understand the "whats expected" from the challenge.

Well, if all we're going to do is discuss about the discussion about what images to discuss then this is a waste of time.

I agree:
I say ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Hot_Pixel selects 3 images by OP Executive Decree, and the discussions on images get started.

I replied saying "ofcourse.. I'd even post some large files for people to play with - if it came to that". I have not heard back from him, and he hasn't posted to this thread since (but he did say that he was traveling). Mine was #3.

Hi everyone sorry I have dissappeared, I been trying to find a wi fi spot fot the last couple if days. I am going to check the email now and will post who responds, sorry for the delay... the hotel we were supposed to be staying at had wi-fi, but had been taken off line due to one of the hurricanes they had come through.

Will post again in a couple minutes.

Ok,

So we are still under a debate on how the photos are going to be chosen for the group, I suggest what I suggested in the begining.. Instead of 10 images, we will roll with 5 images, and each person chooses 3 of the 5 to discuss. They post the thumbnail above their analysis and then analyzes the photo below it. I think it would be easier to follow this way. Bear, Peter and Chromydome you guys are more than welcome to come aboard. Along with anyone else I missed. Consider this to be a bonus week you have 10 images to choose from, next challenge chosen will only have 5. I will however take PM's on ones that people think are interesting to discuss, and include them in the 5 if more than a single person brings them up or as a bonus one or two as well.

Does this sound fair to everyone? I do not only want to have 3 images, some people (myself being one of them) are not particualarlly strong in various aspects of photography and would rather say nothing than be in correct. I think if we have 5 and choose 3, then people will be able to be more comfortable given that they have a choice.

I think this image had a lot of positive possibilities. The way the trees hang over the road and the road leads into the image are great. I think it suffers from several things. If taken later in the day, the sky would not be so bright and overwhelming and there would be a more even light. The rain on the road is good, but I think a polarizing filter would have helped to knock down some of the glare on the road. Lastly, and this can't be resolved, the power line is bothersome. I might have tried to crop that out.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/931/120/735253.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/931/120/735253.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
I like this image and gave it a 7 in the initial review. The composition, placement of the water, boat and mountains in the image and the starkness of color contrast between the snow and water are wonderful. There is little I would criticize, but I would like to have seen a little less area of the flat snow. I don't know if changing the angle of the shot (lower) would have improved the image or not. Also, and I am color blind, it seems there is a bit of a blue tint to the snow.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/931/120/735421.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/931/120/735421.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
I was with the crowd and gave this image a 5 on first review. I like the tree silhouette and I like the star movement. To my eye the colors are a little unrealistic in the sky, and it is a little darker than I would have liked. There is probably a "civilization glow" on the horizon that distracts from the image a little as well. I would have liked to have seen the top of the tree and might have cropped it to move the side trees out of the image.

Technically a very competent photograph. There's a serenity here despite the somewhat cluttered foreground. The reason it works is the foreground elements fit into the composition fairly well and help guide the eye into and around the photograph. For example, the remains of the fence/dock act as a pointer to the skiff, which leads you to the pond, which leads you to the weeds angling off to the left and upward toward the mountain range in the distance. It is by no means a perfect path, the tightness of the crop impedes it somewhat, but it's there and it makes all the elements in the photograph feel as if they belong.

This one and the one below are basically very similar shots in my opinion. Yet one placed 3rd and one placed 185th. The one that scored higher because of the even lighting and the clarity. In the "Field of Yellow" pic, there is some spotting from glare or something surrounding the sun. Also, I think that the Daybreak pic has nice framing, with the tree line in the front. The yellow flower pic doesn't have anything to frame the field in the foreground. In the yellow flower pic there is darkness in the sky where the sun isn't, but the other one has very even lighting. Those are my $0.02.

This is one that I think scored much lower than it possibly should have. The average from the commenters is 8.x, while it actually scored 5.9. I think this is just because it is out of the box and didn't appeal to everybody's tastes. I think the colors are fantastic and the texture is great. I guess the composition is a little straightforward, with it being centered and all, but I don't think it takes away from the pic (perhaps a square frame would be good?). I think the lighting is good and I think the subject is very creative.

I think I gave a 6 to this. I really like the colors here. That amber tone is one we don't see a whole lot. The thing that kept my score at a 6 was that it doesn't seem like much is going on on the right side. I think if it was cropped on the right and a little taken off the top it would be stronger compositionally. Otherwise a great shot, very nice control over the sun rays.

This is a nice simple image where again I like what's going on with the rays. Not too sure I like the vignetting in the upper corners and I wonder if it would be a stronger image if the POV was a little lower, keeping the horizon a bit lower. It's a great sky, but it would be better for me if the tones were a little more consistent on the right side. No doubt a difficult capture though. Perhaps an f/11 (or even lower) and a faster shutter might get better results.

I liked this one a lot too. I agree with what was said before about the blue tint of the snow (seems a little gray). I also wonder if this got cropped as I'd like to see some more detail beyond the left edge. Because it's a big space it seems like it needs to be less square than it is. It looks like it was taken with a wide angle but it doesn't feel like it, and I think that causes it to suffer a bit.

The focal point is in a very desirable part of the frame and conforms with the rule of thirds. However that focus is of the patch of sky and not the road itself or the trees, which leaves me somewhat perpexed especially given the title. Had the patch of sky held some meaning or otherwise deserved the attention, my feelings would be different. That said, this isn't a bad photograph at all. There's a lot to like after you get past the initial entry point. For example, the prominence the trees are given feels appropriate given their real life scale yet the way they maintain that real estate is that of a protector and not an aggressor. The small path in the left corner seems to occupy that limited space free from the threat of intrusion.

This is a photograph I faved earlier. As I mentioned in the photo's thread, the scene looks like two different scenes spliced into one. The top and lower halves if separated could act as complete landscapes in their own right with the fog being the key to completing both images. The scene taken as a whole is quite interesting in its own right. It's not your typical sunrise photo, which often relies heavily on a wider range of colors for it's appeal. This photo doesn't have that nor does it need it.
