I'm sorry got my bits mixed up. USB 3.0 is 4.8Gbps the next evolution of firewire is 3.2Gbps. There's a claimed 6.4Gbps firewire proposal too.

Yea, I noticed that I could go up to 320GB for less than $150. I'll probably go with a 7200rpm model for performance as I never really use my current ibook unless its plugged up, so no need to worry about lower battery life. I also noticed that RAM (for white mb) is 1/2 what it is for the aluminum model with 4GB set (2x2gb) for $50 at OWC.

update: I found and bought a NOS black macbook at bestbuy with 2.4ghz/2gb ram/250gb hd. I found everything that I was looking for $1200, so I'm happy;-). Not to mention my wife & I won't get our macbooks confused since mines black.

Just a random and friendly reminder that the second gen unibody macbooks should be out jan or feb 2009, the current gen has a number of issues that unless you NEED a macbook NOW would be much safer waiting.

And we can always hope for a matte option!

Speaking of transferring stuffs and drives and whatnot I am looking into an esata express card (macbook pro only, sorry guys), and an esata multi-card reader. Then I can transfer camera cards, and connect my external drive, which is USB/esata.

Note this is all hearsay from someone on the Apple discussion forum...

Apple is planning to release a firmware update for the unibody macbooks in order to address the random locking up while gaming. The expected time is within the next three weeks. All currently shipping macbooks have already been updated.

I'm not knowledgeable enough about Apple hardware and the exact reason of the lockups to assess if a firmware update is what is needed. I guess we will see soon if this actually fixes peoples problems or just covers them up (higher fan speed for example)

Just thought I'd give a little heads up since it might apply to some of your machines, I'll keep you updated if I can.

They've done it before- the infamous Mac IIvi lasted 4 months. This just sounds like a firmware update though.

I was talking to a serious Apple user last night, has owned systems since the Mac SE, and he says their average time now is 3 months between generations, and 6-12 months between models.

A generation is the same model but with fixes applied to it as required, usually no new features unless they are software patches.

A new model is usually distinctive from the previous model, new or removed ports for example, major features. Bells, whistles, you know.

At least that is how I understand it. :)

OK, I crossed over yesterday, bought the Macbook Pro 15", but after reading this entire thread...I'm concerned that mine is not the latest and greatest and that my Seagate external won't work with it (as I was told it would). Many of you have spoken about the Macs on a very technical level. I just "use" mine, so are there issues I need to look for? How do I tell what generation mine is?? It's the aluminum unibody w/led screen.

I was FINE until I read all of your comments, lol. :)

Aperture is not opened yet...should I return for Lightroom? Is there something better for photo editing than CS4 for Mac? ($600 to upgrade/switch platforms from Adobe)

Some of you have already gotten PMs as I hadn't seen this thread, but any insight as to what software and should I be concerned that mine is already old?

I've also heard that Aperture is a resource hog compared to Lightroom. Would that be a concern with this computer?It supposedly has dedicated memory just for the graphics card. (And...does that mean absolutely nothing here, lol)

The card at Best Buy explained it easier. The box says this: MSP 15.4/2.53/2XGB/320/SD/512VRAM ?/!! Should I be looking in another place??
