Really?? I didnt know that. So then the descriptions are used as they are suggested? Word to word? Thats even more entertaining for someone who maintains the system. Then it would be a true (not representational) democracy.. only in a documentary that all of us are actors in... free to suggest descriptions...free to complain about them.. life is fun;-)

Anyways, not to complain - just pointing out that fact that you aren't omniscient.

Ok, to begin with you obviously missed the part where I said: I am not disputing that it can be difficult to tell the difference. All the more reason that zoo shots should be in zoo challenges, not wildlife challenges, so then there is not a problem. :)

If there were no zoo shots allowed then I could not have mistaken yours for one, and it would have been scored appropriately. Where there is room for doubt by allowing such zoo shots, then it behooves you to not only shoot a wildlife image, but shoot an image that appears to be truely wildlife. Don't shoot me, I am not the one that caused the problem. Oh, and I never said I was omniscient, but I do appreciate you mis judging me and giving me a personal attack though. :)

My voting trail for this challenge started at a '1'. And reading this conversation, I suspect I got another 1 there not so long ago eheheheh.
Thank you strange commenter.

Must be shot against a plain white background, with light from 45 degrees to the photographer's right, fill reflector to the left (your choice of angle.) Must be shot at ISO 100. No other objects should appear in the photograph. Must be shot on a Tuesday, and edited on Thursday or Friday (your choice). Title will be "Purple Wool Sock". Variations are not authorized.

Are we talking Purple Wool socks indoors or outdoors ? In shoe or out of shoe ? Long socks or short socks ? Pure wool or 10% synthetic ? Should they have a foot in them, or is a hand allowed ? Must they be worn normally or can you turn them into a sock monster ?

So many questions . . could you be a little clearer on exactly what you had in mind ??

Oh ok, I'll be honest I didn't actually read this thread - who has time for 15 pages‽

No personal attack, I'm just saying you can't be sure which shots are 'zoo' shots and which would fit into your criteria for true wildlife. I mean most of the shots in this challenge could have been taken in the backyard of my parents house! =)

Oh, i'd like to ask how I can take a wildlife picture and make it truly look 'wild'?

I'm with you Deb - I thoroughly enjoyed voting on this as I said a few pages back and find all the arguing is spoiling an enjoyable challenge, and I suspect affecting some of the scores.

Maybe we can start an alternate Wildlife Scores thread that sticks to scores ? After all there is still most of the week to go . .

I'm sorry, this has to be one of the most asinine things I've ever read.

Good idea! After quickly browsing over this thread I'm quite happy I didn't the picture of 'squirrel boy' I took at the local carnival.

Zoo, wildlife or whatever I hope people can at least be honest after the challenge and say which it was. That way I can at least figure out where I really placed in the wildlife aspect to this challenge. :P

Never, I shall take my secret location to the grave! No one on DPC will ever get a 4.9 and nasty comments in a wildlife challenge if I can help it!

OK, children, everyone siddown, shaddup and behave or I'll go back and give EVERYONE 1s and un-fave all the faves I just clicked on! Jeesh!

And y'all should be getting mad at me, not Langdon, though I only suggested that we have the wildlife challenge in the fall as opposed to the dead of winter.

Well, he can and does reword if necessary, but I imagine he'd rather not have to :)

:-)

After this discussion, though, I'm not sure if mine is wildlife or not. It's an indigenous animal taken at a city park. It's the animal's natural environment, but I didn't go slogging through the wilds of San Diego for days on end to get the shot. I came home from the shoot with a nasty rash, though...Do I get extra brownie points for that?

Since this is a scores thread...

Done voting, but still will go back and add more comments, add some favs, and bump a lot of shots. For some reason my heart just isn't into the commenting tonight, though.

You have rated 158 of 159 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 33 images (21%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.1013.

There were no zoo shots in this challenge. None. Was a photo of a tiger someone's exotic pet shot in a back yard? Is that elephant a domesticated working animal in India? Was that innocent looking gray squirrel actually shot in a zoo? Is that gnu secretly old? There is absolutely no way to know. Even with a special rule, there is nothing recorded in EXIF that would indicate whether an animal was shot in a zoo, so if everyone said they took a shot in the wild, we would have no way to prove otherwise for DQ purposes and the issue is a moot point. All you can do is make assumptions, which WILL lead to embarrassments as demonstrated above.

probably a cat on a balcony should be more wild of many great images in the challenge but there is a but. if the photographer have the ability to show a shot captured in a zoo that seems a real wild o savage life (choose you) well for me is wildlife!

Normally you have to hit people over the head with the challenge theme in order to score very high. I could be wrong but it doesn't seem like that's the case here. Just show an animal that you associate as being in the wild and you're golden whether it is acting wild or not doesn't seem to matter. If this was any other challenge I bet those scoring the highest would be saddled with a lot of low votes not because it was taken at a zoo or whatever but because it didn't focus on showing the wild aspect. Am I wrong?

Actually, the small zoo located only 15 minutes from me by car is open only May-September. Too many of their animals are delicate exotics that wouldn't last in the cold.

And Shannon scalvert is right, everyone. This whole thing has gotten wildly out of hand - barely into the 2nd day of voting and this thread is 14 pages long. Please, let's bury the hatchet, or at least bury it in the skulls of the trolls voting everyone down.

Bujanx...thanks man, I know the scores will eventually return to what they truly deserve. Still a bummer to watch em take a .8 dive though.
