Just realized- of the twelve images on the front page- eight are from Canons....six of those are from 5D's...... The remaining four are Nikon.

I take it to mean the serious people are also serious about their equipment. But I'll bet you find a lot of high end equipment in the pack as well.

Mouse: Wha... what does that mean?
Switch: It doesn't mean anything.

there are those that have ribboned with point and shoots and those that "missed it by this much" on camera phones!
It's the eye, man...the eye! ;)

I agree, I don't think it means anything either. Just found it interesting. I tend to notice the equipment of the ribboners (is that a word?) and this is one of the more lopsided front pages I've seen in awhile.

And I was wrong- its nine Canons, to three Nikons

Of the three Canon non 5D shots two were shot with 30d's and one a 10D

The Nikon were one D100, one D70s, one D200.

This is also the first time that I've seen all four blue ribbons going to one camera. (That doesn't mean I haven't missed it in the past).

If I'm not mistaken, the first 9 of 10 in the studio portrait challenge were shot with a Canon.

Proud to be a member of the first category! (That said, the new Canon Rebel is in my near future...)

No amount of equipment can make you creative or have a good eye but coming from a point and shoot user... damn I wish I had a better camera with more control... I could be a lot more creative with more options. Certain techniques are totally closed off with a camera that limits your control of the exposure and has a huge shutter lag, crappy autofocus, etc. Can you do great photo's with a point and shoot... well of course... with a great eye and a little luck but it would be a lot easier with a great camera and great lenses with a good eye and a little luck.

A camera is an information gathering computer. What makes a good photo is time and experience... and that certain "vision".

I still have little confidence.

Amazing! The most popular camera brand in the world is the most popular camera brand on dpchallenge? What are the odds...

/too much sarcasm?

Good Camera + Good Lens + Good Creative Talent = Great Photo
Take any one, substitue:

Have a crappy lens, get a crappy photo
Don't have good creative talent, get a sharp boring photo
Have a crappy camera, probably still get a great photo

Its that simple, the type of camera is not as important as the other two. Personally, I suffer from the lack of creative talent, which I'm trying to regain.

and did anyone notice that in the Brothers Grimm challenge the LAST 5 places (minus the DQ) were:

Canon
Nikon
Pentax
Canon
Canon

kind of goes along with what has been said..it's not always the equipment.

Both systems are good. The camera records, the human takes the photograph. You have to develop an eye and know your equipment, how to make it sing. Remember the camera is just your paint brush, it's up to you to create the image. I have ribbons from juried photography contest taken with a yashica 35mm, screw mount lenses. These were judged by top professionals, I will admit that these lenses were sharp, even if they were cheap.

Are you saying that the front page is full of brainwashed individuals? ;D
