There has been some negativity going around so I wanted to tell everybody why I like DPC. If you have a story about why you like DPC please share it in this post.

A couple years ago I purchased a camera to take photos of my family. I bought a Nikon D50 refurb for $300 and when I opened it up I took a photo of a flower. I then opened the photo in Picasa and put an effect on it and thought it was pretty neat. I was surfing, found this site and decided that I wanted to make photography my hobby. I posted up a couple other photos and received some positive feedback on them.

There was enough good things in the comments to keep me going. There were however times when a "jerk" just said stupid things in order to get at me a bit. I have been told to "read my manual", or "search the forums", or "buy a book so that I can get better". Some of the comments made me want to stop coming here, but there were those few people that inspired me by taking the time to speak a word of encouragement, or show me something about my camera or software that I did not know. It was those things that keep me here enjoying my stay.

I like many others just want to take a photo that inspires me, and makes me feel good. I have no aspirations of being a pro, or that my photos will hang on the wall of a gallery. I just want to take a photo that when I look at it, I say "sweet!". I enjoy DPC tremendously because in the past two years I have been able to achieve those photos that make me say "sweet!". It was from voting on challenges, looking at other photos, and asking for comments that helped me along. If it was not for DPC I would never have been able to get the images that I see in my head onto the screen. I owe a debt of gratitude to many people on this site for making me a better photographer. I would have never in my wildest dream imagined that I would have come so far so quickly.

I think that DPC does a fine job, even though I have been guilty of being critical at times. If I look back on my photography over the last 2 years from my very first shot until now, I don't know how I can be very critical. It is the very best value in photography education there is in my opinion. Keep up the good work DPC'ers, thanks to all the staff, council members, and to all that helped me learn to shoot along the way.

Thank you for the positive post. I too like DPC for the same reasons... Plus to add I like this place because I have personally learned SOO much about one of the funnest hobbies that I have ever done. Great shot by the way. ;)

Even with the negativity, I think the site is historically amazing and unbelievable. Does that, however, make it acceptable for the site itself to stop growing and progressing? The so-called negativity going on recently is in response to some individual beliefs that the site needs some upgrades. Now, enough on the defensive side and to avoid hijacking the thread...

This community is amazing. There is nowhere else that I could have as easily grown in the photographic world as I feel that I have done here. There are so many individuals that participate here and willingly give their time and insight to help others grow.

Once you get past the harshness of the challenges, this is a great online community.

BTW, I am also a strong believer in the concept of

(But that does not keep me from asking questions, or answering them.)

Jsson, thanks for starting this and here is my story -

I liked shooting snapshots as a kid, but didn't do much for years. A few years ago, I started carrying a camera with me on sales trips to document construction activity, and found myself stopping on the side of the road more and more often to shoot animals, landscape, whatever I found. I was hooked! I read several books on photography, subscribed to the photo magazines, but until I found DPC I had no direct way of getting critiqued or being able to see so many other photogs' work.

Although I can't enter challenges every week, I see my progress. I feel more confidant commenting and critiquing others' photos. I truly appreciate this community, and see so many people sharing their talent and knowledge, willing to help each other not only in pursuit of this art, but even in their private lives.

I do not believe you can find this knowledge base and concern for community anywhere else, at any price.

Photography is a great hobby for someone who travels a lot. Funny thing is I used to be a field tech and drove all over the area. As soon as I got an office job and now see the same things every day, that's when I got into it. Go figure...

No actually I don't understand a word in it. lol My flash has really got me confused. To this day I barley know how it works.

This site has not only taught me directly , it has also given me the resources to find information on my own.

I'm not very active lately , however I'm still shooting and using the lessons I've learned here at DPC.

Your most recent portrait is really nice. I disagree with the Expert Editing challenges as we get tons and tons of that HDR crap.

I like HDR..... lol to each his own! I don't like the plasticy look I like the crazy sky look!!

Nothing about that look natural, though. Sure, there are some fine examples that come out really well. Overall, I hate it.

Oh I'll never argue that my pic looks natural but in theory HDR should be able to reproduce a scene that was closer to what your eyes saw when you took the shot. You just don't like pushed images. I'm discovering with my portraits lately that I'm not having to much of anything in photoshop. I do minor stuff levels and sharpening but overall my last batch I hardly touched. I'm using a strobist set up and light is everything lol.

I like dpc because even with all the negativity, whining and elitism something magical always seems to happen here. Be it amazing photos or amazing acts of kindness and generosity.. Oh yeah, and there's always that one larrikin who makes me throw my head back and truly laugh out loud! And thats all I need.

I also love DPC. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time, and if not for DPC, I would not have known some of the things I know now.

I like the side challenges, chiefly due to the themed approach and the lack of editing rules.

I like DPC because it's the one website that always has at least something to do on it when I'm bored and suffering from insomnia.

Although I do think that more people need to become night owls. Or move to the other side of the globe.

Two Reasons for Me:

1) Gets me shooting more. (You can't improve without taking shots)
2) I love watching others improve around me. Going through others photos can be inspiring at times.

The community's ability to rally around it's members in time of need, such as the case with SDW.
The people here who take the time to help others out, whether it's photography or something else.
It's a fun place to learn, grow, and expand your photographic horizons.

LOL, goes to show you others peoples tastes are so different. I love that shot, I think it is one of better ones I have seen recently.
