A little bit - more like a happy coincidence.

It means we're supposed to search for something we weren't searching for :)

Or to create an image that represents the concept of serendipity...

That's what I'm intending to enter anyway.

I have an idea but I just don't know if I can pull off a decent image from it.

And as soon as you find it, it no longer qualifies.

I think to most people the following will explain:

LUCK

There we go! Although in my mind serendipity is luck with a little help from God.

Simple explanation of Serendipity is "a fortunate accident".

Maybe they mean we should stop taking disingenuous photos for one week. I know I get tired of seeing obviously fake, forced, photos in every challenge.

(Not saying you shouldn't pose or setup for a photograph, just saying if you do it shouldn't look obvious.)

Could it be simplified to the point of saying "Take a candid photo of something?"

To me, that's not quite what serendipity is. I think there should be an aspect of genius in the finding, something that looks like you need to be a genius to come up with (even if it was 'just' a stroke of luck).

To me the act of taking the photograph itself needn't be serendipitous (ie a fortuitous but accidental find) though that would certainly work too.

The image itself could simply represent serendipity in whichever way the photographer decides. For example it could be a (set up) image showing the results of prior serendipity.

When I think of serendipity I think of something whimsical which also brings to mind something fanciful or capricious.

the faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought after, webster's definition. It seems to me that this does not necessarily mean just a candid photo. More like a diamond in the rough, when you are not looking for a diamond. Finding a hundred dollar bill on the sidewalk, when you are not looking for it. This is going to be an interesting challenge, to say the least! Good luck, everyone!

So its not like ten thousand spoons...when all you need is a knife...

This is meandering dangerously close to the mess that the irony turned in to, with a large chunk of people entering pictures that had nothing to do with irony, and everything to do with Alanis Morissette :)

Now that we all know what serendipity means, pulling this off photographically will be quite tough...

My "out of place" would fit this challenge quite well i think.. oh well, best of luck to all!

Yeah, but, Gordon, I bet that if ANYONE in the world NOW has a really good understanding and appreciation of the meaning of the word ironic it's Alanis Morissette!

And isn't THAT ironic?!

To me, serendipity is finding a beautiful, shady square down a back alley from a busy bustling street....

its going to be a really tough challenge to shoot though.

So its basically going out and finding that really great picture you've been looking for. Tough part is having people understand why it fits the challenge.

I think if you're looking for it, its not serendipity when you find it. (but I'm splitting hairs)

How would the voter know if you were looking for it or not?

Most probably, titles are going to play an important part in this challenge.

Something I wrote last week:
Serendipity

I love your website, Gordon! In fact, I registered and will visit often.

On the topic, I believe serendipity happens all the time. So often, that, to me, the range of acceptable images will be very wide, indeed. The key phrase is "accidental discovery". When we're outside roaming about with our cameras in hand, there are all sorts of things we run across - without deliberately looking for them.

I think the REAL challenge will be trying to exclude something. Maybe we just vote down anything that looks obviously posed or created for the camera??

Lenk
I hope you don't...
I'm thinking of entering an image that will be clearly posed but represents most strongly to me the strongest instance of serendipity in my life.

How about this as a serendipity - (this is not what I'm actually going to shoot - I'm just trying to figure out the literal interpretation of this word with some hypothetical examples):
a) there is a sign in a park for a certain bird and that bird actually sits on the sign
or
b) there is a road sign for a deer crossing and a deer just happens to be crossing the road at that time
c) there is a group of wild flowers that are all the same colour and there is a single flower in the bunch that is a different colour and it really stands out.

Out of curiousity... would you feel that any one of these photos "would not fit the challenge description?"
