Oh. Liking the poem, the peace pic, and the I'm against everything.

When I leave, and I will someday....no one will notice.

I don't have ribbons hanging on my profile page.

A couple of stars from entries submitted,...6 and change on my highest score, 5 and change on my average.

I don't kiss ass, or kiss babies for my popularity.

I try to tell it like it is without a lot of fan fare.

Not that it matters, I won't loose sleep.

When that day comes for me to move on, the question I will have to ask myself is this....

....did I make a difference?

You could take the top-10 winners of each challenge for one month & then ask them to vote on a 'juried' challenge once a month.

So let me be sure I understand this correctly. You want to take the top 10. The same top 10 who were elevated to that status by the mere mortals that you feel are unworthy to cast a vote, or comment upon the work of the gods, correct? Does this not seem a bit self defeating to you? The very people you disdain will be picking your illustrious jury. Oh the humanity of it all...

To sum it up. I don't think the top 10 in a challenge guarantees anymore of an understanding of your or anyone else's work. Just because you can take a great picture, it doesn't make you a great critic. Ever notice that Oscar winners are seldom used to critique movies?

It would take more work, but perhaps going through the comments left by members, perhaps starting with the Critique Club and Reaction Club, and look for those who have insightful comments and reviews, and then ask them to do the judging. Or even more off beat, ask some college art or photography majors to do the job. Especially those near graduation. They are trained, and it might even be able to be arranged as a class project. Perhaps even evolving into an outreach activity by the site.

I will remember when this image is gone. Freaking hysterical.

BTW I think it is safe to say that entering challenges every week could also cause burnout. If it becomes a "have to" instead of a "get to" many members might just need a break. I took a year off, because I just didn't have the time. Maybe that is what is going on.

Naw, I didn't say the ribbon hogs, I said the top 10, in every challenge for one month. They could vote on the first challenge for the next month--or not. Comments not required. It would make a smaller pool of voters, with enough people in it to provide anonymity, & might skew the results in an interesting way. At least, it would be interesting to try once. Like a voting challenge instead of a submission challenge.

[eta] Not asking for anyone to understand my work, not looking for insightful comments, not feeling disdain for anyone, just hoping for a little variety. Think of all the hoo-rah that would jam the Rant forum! In fact the 1st challenge of the month could be a bare-knuckles no-holds-barred street-rules challenge that I would feel a lot of interest in. JMO.

I am coming up on 5 years on DPC. Some years I have been more involved and others less. I have been happy to see that it is still the good ol' DPC, though new improvements here and there have almost always been welcome. I just love how the core nature of the site, a place about photography for different levels of photographers. There really is, at least to me, something for everyone. Sometimes I'm more active in forums, sometimes more in challenges, sometimes more in comments. Other times I'm busy with my photography business (of which I wouldn't be doing without the help of DPC) and family and school (of which I didn't have to worry about several years back when I entered challenges weekly).

Another think I love is the though members come and go, its awesome to see that the sense of community is always there, its just the nature of the site, it's wonderful.

I'll always come and go as time, interest, life etc.. change, but I'll always be back. I'm hooked as you will.

I think the league should disappear, but that is an entire other can of worms.

I second Lisa's comment - you've been one of the more helpful contributors here with all of your links. Very much appreciated!

Ya know.......it's funny.

If you look back and REALLY read and think about what's been said here, there are some serious words of wisdom, some deep feelings, and some tremendous insight.

There are some terrific photographers in this discussion, and among these people, there are none of the "Big-Time" ribbon winners.

But it's the people like those that are here that care enough to explore, and discuss what we can do, that are among the talented members here.

As some have said, it's NOT just the ribbon-winning elite that are the talented members that really make up the talent, but it's about the people, too.

I DO see what pawdrix means through his discussion; I see things differently, but I also think that we are both diligent and honest in our voting and commenting, as well as putting our best foot forward in our entries.

We may seek different results, but I'd have to say that we're both good people to have in the mix. I know I'll surely look at any comment I get from him in the future MUCH more seriously, and I might just PM him and have him elaborate BECAUSE he looks at things a little differently.

I hope any comment I may leave him evokes the same.

I know we're spot on in the way we feel about the side challenges.

I'll never be one of the elite, and that's fine.......it's not why I'm here. I'm vastly more skilled, and I certainly HAVE been trained much better how to both shoot and look (In your hat, pawdrix, I don't want to hear it!) and that's been a significant part of my growth.

I hope all of you who have been involved in this thread stick around because you bring much to the table with your views, IMNSHO........share them with the membership, they are valuable.

Ramble off.......8>)

By golly, I think you are correct. I have noticed, over the years, that many of these threads, after the initial yelling, screaming, and chest pounding, settle out into something thoughtful and productive.

Perhaps a juried side challenge could be arranged. See how it works out, and if it works well it could be expanded into a more structured regular event. I'm thinking the side challenges could turn into a nice prototyping and proving ground for site changes and growth.

As one of the previous posters said, variety is important to continued interest.

This subject (Juried competition) was tossed around earlier this year.

Here's the thread ==> Challenges voted by Judges

Oh, that's a TERRIFIC idea!!!!!

When're ya gonna start it?........8>)

That's the thing about side challenges.....you just throw the idea out there, and if people sign up, you're good to go!

I'd volunteer to join in whatever capacity I might be helpful.

You'll need both photogrpahers & judges.....and perhaps categories.

Would it make the most sense to utilize existing rulesets?

I'd be willing to bet you could get some awesome talents for judging.....and ones who'd be surprised at how much they're held in admiration.

Melethia comes to mind, and I'm thinking pawdrix who has certainly bared his soul and given some gut-level honesty here would be an excellent pair of thorough observers of the craft......I'm sure that if you asked for suggestions for judges, you'd get a lot of the people who aren't big time ribbon winners, but people whose opinions are held in high regard.......like the aforementioned two. posthumous comes to mind as well.

Melethia has no formal training whatsoever, but the others you mentioned do, I think. RKT, xianart, and Bear_Music would make awesome judges.

All terrific suggestions......and Deb, you've just proved part of what I was saying about potential terrific judges here selling themselves short.

I kinda know you from being a part of the Team Suck family, and I would very much be interested in your being a judge in a challenge that I'd enter looking for juried judging.

You're thoughtful & considerate, yet honest, and you know what you're doing.

You have much DPC experience.....

What better qualifications could I ask?

Melethia is funny however, and that is worth a thousand judges.

She also has a bizarre tendency, though only rarely, to talk about herself in the third person. And she wonders... is that funny "ha ha" or funny "odd"? Perhaps a combo deal....

Ok, look, I can read between the lines here. I know what's going on. I understand that y'all are too scared to ask.

So I accept. I'll be one of your damned judges. Ok? Make you happy?

Here are my conditions:

I want a ribbon a week. Doesn't have to be blue, random color is fine, as long as it's a primary color.

I want 30 comments a month, and they have to be good. None of this "great shot!" Although I'll accept "You're the king!"

I want a nice corner office, with a leather chair, and a crystal bowl on the desk full of peanut butter M&Ms.

I want a weekly supply of beef jerky.

If these conditions are met in short order, then I'll be happy to be a judge on your illustrious panel for an upcoming challenge. I know, I know, how tirelessly selfless of me.

You were doing fine until the part about the beef jerky. Any judge worth his or her salt knows that beef jerky and peanut butter M&Ms do NOT mix.

Melethia Yes, but she also is an expert and takes super cool photos therefore would make an exceptional judge of others.

So, I will do it for JUST the beef jerky!! Follow the lead of all Governmental Acquisitions Processes and go with the lowest bidder...... That always works out well.

My expertise is in blabbing, not photography. But those people up there are dedicated to photography. Pawdrix, too. He's a fanatic.
