Mall shoppers? Guy with a clipboard could grab 'em, drag 'em into a room with a PC (and calibrated monitor) and let them vote?

(Pretty sure the SC have plenty to do and get blamed for/yelled at without being a jury, too.)

You could take the top-10 winners of each challenge for one month & then ask them to vote on a 'juried' challenge once a month.

How about thos mall survey people. They don't have anything really useful to do anyway. Make them vote. There must be thousands of those dudes.

IMO, that would be the surest way to stop people from wanting to win ribbons.

So, in effect you're suggesting the top-10 winners don't vote? don't want to vote? don't like to vote? They just like to win? No comments requested. Just a vote? [edit to fix typo]

No, I'm suggesting that the "reward" for winning being forced to jury a challenge, along with all the complaints and bitching, time issues, and annoyances that go along with such a thing, isn't much of a reward at all. When you jury something, it is no longer anonymous. You then have to deal with pissed off people that don't agree with you, with your fellow jury members and all the compromises and disagreements that arise with that, and so on and so forth.

It's simply not a good idea.

Juried challenges now and then, sure, why not, but you'd have to find volunteers. Not forced participants, and especially not as a 'reward' for doing well.

NO, I think they are saying the top ten would form a Jedi Council that would vote on a challenge each month as a jury.

Top ten as a jury? Yeah, let's try that for a few months running and maybe we can get the front pages to look identical. (Now you know, I am a very bad person).

Agreed, this is all very unnecessary. I will stay too. (I'm a very talented member if I do so myself... Just not so much with the photography :P)

I'll preface this with an "I know I'm not the "best and brightest" nor the "elite" of this site"...I can only give my point of view. I could care less if they did leave. I'm much sadder when the more interesting photogs of the site pack up their stuff and hit the road...like xion, boysetsfire, Ubique...and a bunch of other peeps in my faves. There are a plethora of super talented image makers here that simply don't get the time of day, and they could probably care less.

I did pack up my junk and leave earlier this year. I will tell you why:

The above picture was my entry for the "Blurry Mess" challenge, it was titled "Flight of Fancy". I self DQed it...because of many of the comments I was getting.

"too blurry"

"not blurry enough"

"wrong kind of blurry"

It was ridiculous and yes I was being a wuss. I had had enough. Now please understand I am not trying to discourage commenting. I just wanted people to be more thoughtful...and actually see what I was showing them, not everyone...just some of the viewing audience. I didn't want to know how to fix it. I had decided I was no longer getting anything from this site except a headache and woe. I'm not new to photography, not even close. Why was I putting images before people that just picked up cams a year ago, or even four years ago....was I a masochist? I've been expressing myself through my lens for well over 25 years now. I have an extensive background in art...maybe it was time to move on. It was a tough decision to call it quits, it was depressing actually. I had really enjoyed DPC, I had learned so darn much here as far as digital processing goes. You see, when I first found DPC, I was new to digital photography, and what a great helpful community this was for those new to all things digital.

I finally decided to come back after a couple months away. Why? I missed many friends I had made here. This community is like no other I had found. I love how active it is here...always something going on. The side challenges are great...a place where like minds can hang out and share their work. Maybe people aren't as helpful here anymore...I'm not sure. I'm always happy to help and share, but I posses no ribbons to show my worth as an elite. I can't tell you how to make an image step by step because I myself mainly take pictures that aren't repeatable. The pictures I take are so utterly connected with my persona and mind, they are nearly automatic.

I had returned to DPC with a new mindset. I'd enter challenges for fun when I felt like it, be amused by the comments and cherish the favorites, and know that at least something connected with some people. I know that winning a ribbon here is not a guide for my worth as a photographer. I have aimed my sites MUCH higher as far as competition goes.

As far as having a jury...I'd love to be a juror, but alas I have no ribbon to prove my worth. I've juried exhibitions before and it'd be so excellent to hand out some first time ribbons around here to some of our more obscure members.

Thank you for coming back, Rachel - you've been one of my favs for a very long time. I truly enjoy wandering through your portfolio.

Fear? Had I fear, I would not enter at all. Maybe we should try it, the jury of 10; it might be way more interesting than anyone would suspect.

RKT you are one of the people I was most sad to see go - I'd hang out over at your blog - but it wasn't the same as knowing you were here.

Your work SPEAKS to me in ways few others do - I admire you so and think that people here NEED to see your expression of photography - it may not win ribbons, but Holy Cow it is rich and wonderful, artistic and well... yeah ... quirky!

Your processing is spectacular - all your images have amazing colour and depth and your use of perspective and DOF is brilliant.

PLEASE don't leave again - it's hard when people like you and Nick (boysetsfire) and others move off site - logging into individual flicker/blog/other places sometimes seems 'cold' to me.

Selfish? Yep - but I want you and others here to balance this beautiful thing we all love called photography!

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only my photo will remain.

Now it gets a favorite.

Don't worry about comments... I have been told that I used too much of a plugin I don't even own. I have been told that my stuff is "boring", I have been told "try again". Who cares. In there somewhere is a comment that is a real gem, and I am able to learn something from it. Not all comments are worth listening to. That is why you mark them helpful or not.
