Shall we get the pot stewing on the next challenge. I don't live in a city though I did for 4 years a while back. So for me the challenge is finding some way to symbolize those 4 years. How do you photograph the sound of a rape. One where you can't tell where the sound is coming from. aelith

I believe that a 'city life' photograph could consist of just about anything... I think that a photograph of just about anything in or around your city or town could be worth the post.

I just hope that people remember that "it is relative" to where you live. The nearest thing to a city for me is 20 - 25 miles away, and even then, compared to Atlanta, Charlotte, etc., Asheville is just a big town. My "city" has lots of green stuff and wild critters runnin' around. :-)

Aelith, I am sorry that that is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of city life. There are alot of things about living in a big city besides an escalated crime rate. One of my ideas was to try and portray the feeling of a person alone in a crowd. Unlike living in a smaller community where everybody knows everybody, in the city a peroson can be alone among millions.

There are so many aspects to city life it would be impossible to encapsulate the whole with a single photo. I once lived in a small city and have know people that love living in Seattle and Tacoma. In addition to what has already been mentioned, I can see a city as a living entity with bustling crowds busses and taxis. City life means walking or taking a bus or subway (no subway in Seattle darn it) virtually anywhere. I see the theatre, a thriving nightlife, a busy port, vast amounts of art, fine dining, and cultural diversity. Just wanted to present another side of the same beast.

Hmmm, prety good but too clean for rape. Excellent photo. Actually the comment about isolation is closer to my feelings. all those blank windows in that big old hotel turned into an appartment building.

OK to be fair I had lots of lousy shots of Chicago and some fantastic images in my mind but nothing I can reproduce this week. Or this time of year.

And forgive me, I made a shocking statement to bring home the point that life in the city is more than tall buildings. (You should see the difference in the price of a McD hamburger there and here, Missouri.)

The City is:

the people of the city.

the buildings of the city.

the urbanity of the city.

the art of the city.

the chaos of the city.

the density of the city.

the dirt of the city.

the pain of the city.

the ugliness of the city.

Well it's cliched now, but any photo of ground zero would be good for City Life.

I'm relishing this challenge since I just move to New York 1 week ago! I'm gonna skip the ground zero entry though.

Well, have fun - NY should be a great place to get a City Life photo - but then like others have said, we should all be able to get a good photo from anywhere.

I don't think ground zero or anything like it would be good for 'city life'. It doesn't represent life in a city, it represents only evil and terrorism. That's one of the very last ideas I would use for this challenge. City LIFE is the topic. I invision some form of activity. Something thriving not destroyed.

Certainly, ground zero shows one aspect of New york. Granted, it is a very big aspect of the city right now but to me it doesn't represent New York. I think that would be a very sad thing if it did. Obviously, New york is about way more than those terrible events. We just might be seeing this challenge differently. The meaning of this challenge to me is to create a photo that coveys my interpretation of my city. I'm too positive of a person to let terrorism ruin my view of the city I live in. That's what make this site so great, though, the opportunity to see other people's views on life.

It's just that I think besides all the negativity connected with ground zero....if you look at the other side....not that there could be any good to come of innocent lives taken so horribly, but if you look at how the country and the city itself pulled together in that time of need and still does....that's all I was thinking.

God bless all the innocent lives taken and I see your point as well, Tim.

The meaning to me and I wish it wasn't, is that "City Life" is something that is alive. Humans, animals, and anything that is growing are life. I went to San Francisco yesterday to take pictures. I wanted to take pictures of people working or doing things. I did not find really anything to my liking and I would have rather entered a skyscraper or people around buildings. I even thought about chasing the prostitutes around getting their pictures but I thought better. Even had the idea about street gangs but then again there is other things in a city other than crime. I will probably have a more boring image but I will be safer for it.

I feel quite disadvantaged on this challenge... I live in a bean town... I have been looking around for the last few days for decent photo ops and not come up with anything really worth while... I have some photos but none of them really define 'city life' as most would expect.

Rural America contains lots of nice photo opportunities but I think that rural and city contradict somewhat in my own mind.

The funny thing about my town is that it's not really that small. The population of my city is about 50,000. This part of north carolina is furniture and textile country. The industry here is not 'pretty' or photogenic in any way. I can photograph old men on the park benches... lol... The little shops are not photogenic...

I have three options...I can duck this challenge... I can post a shot that is not an 'urban' city theme... I can drive to a city about an hour away and look for photos..

I like the second idea the best because I doubt very seriously that my shot would be duplicated... lol...

any ideas?

You can go with option 3. Head down to Atlanta and we can shoot the town. I still haven''t got my shot yet.

I am getting kinda city shot out. Seems like the only time I get to take most of my pictures is at nite, and the only place I know to do that is city shots. I think I have tried to shoot everything that is the least bit interesting from the hours of 10pm til 2am. And besides sometimes I feel a little unsafe walking around downtown with my digital equiptment at midnight.

For those of you in the country, The challenge is simply "city life" - This could be past or present (ghost town)- This could even be an ant colony - The challenge does not mention urban environment required.

Tell that to the voters.

No kidding. Think my picture of the groundhog (whistlepig, woodchuck, whatever you may call it) running to the river would work. I could call it "Escape!"
