So I have 2 questions..I trust people here more than other sites.

1. I had a D80 with a couple Sigma lenses and a 50mm 1.8 lens and a SB 600 flash. So i didnt have the BEST glass.. but it worked and i was going to upgrade soon... but..... It was ALL stolen from me 2 nights ago.. so Im back to square one. I have 1,200 to buy new (or used) stuff (camera and lens(es)).. I mostly do event photography for my job and outside portraiture stuff for my own business.. (i dont have a studio) I want to stick with Nikon. I was thinking about upgrading but i need to make sure i have enough for a camera and a lens.. I have been lookin on ebay for a used D200.. but i dont know if thats possible to get a camera and lens for 1200.. so should i stick with a D80 and just get better glass, or should i upgrade and work on the lenses as it comes... probably some more sketch lenses until i can afford better ones? What about the D90?

2. Where should i look for my stolen camera? i have the Serial numbers and i gave them to the police but thats all i could do...

any help would be appreciated

Bummer!

I hope you had the equipment insured. I can't give much advice about what to replace it with, however you should probably keep an eye on ebay and your local Craigs list for your type of equipment to see if perhaps yours shows up.

Have another look at Canon. I know I will.

I saw a D90 kit on the shelf at my local camera shop yesterday when I was buying my 18-200 VR lens.

There are kits for the D90 and the 18-105VR lens that are being advertised for $1299.

VR Rocks!!!

There have been a bunch of new cameras presented by both Nikon and Canon.

I would suggest looking on ebay for the used bodies gear-junkies are selling to buy the new stuff.

Then you can by some basic lens with the rest of your money.

Of course, it sounds like this is part of a business and you can't afford to have your used equipment break. You might want to buy new. Since the new stuff is out, BH is still selling the old stuff.

As part of a business you need backups for everything- what if you had a job to do today? Not that one can't lose everything of course...

What about insurance? Sounds like what you lost is worth more than $1200. If you're making money with your gear then you need business type insurance as it wll also pay for rental gear and lost income should you miss a gig because of the theft.

Used will certainly make your money go farther. Fredmiranda.com has a very good buy/sell forum (at least for canon stuff). Yeah, new is nice for many reasons, but you lost used gear so there's nothing wrong with getting 'new'used gear.

As far as looking for your gear goes, check the local pawn shops, and check eBay.

Most everything on eBay is listed by location, even if there is some vague location in the item listing the zip code of the lister is known to eBay.

If you use the sort to show items listed near you first, it can whittle down the amount you have to look through quite a bit. (Most likely the camera is within a few miles of you, unless it was stolen while you were on a trip.) If you do come across cameras close to you in the next few weeks. (They may wait a bit before trying to sell.) Ask the listing part for the serial#, you can give them some story about how certain series were recalled or something. If it is the thief, they will have no way of knowing that it isn't true.

Does Nikon have a theft reporting system, to let their repair facility know that the camera is stolen?

If the person who stole it, is going to use it for personal use, then it is unlikely that it will ever be found. (Sadly...)
