Early Sunday morning at approx. 2:00am PST, power transmission lines within the property failed. Hotel guests from all 3,000 rooms were relocated to other hotels within the city as the MGM/Mirage company started to investigate and make repairs. Replacement cable had to be trucked from Los Angeles and arrived Monday morning. After three days of being completely dark, the MGM/Mirage hopes to have guests within it's doors by late this afternoon. The Bellagio accounts for $3 million dollars a day in revenue and it's estimated that this blackout will cost the company upwards to $1 billion in lost cash flow.

Light from the Paris and Alladin Hotels reflect onto the Bellagio. The fountains which once entertained thousands of visitors a night, lay quiet and still.

One of the many marquees is dark, as a stream of light shines behind it from the Luxor Hotel.

Looking down the Strip, Caesars Palace and the Mirage Hotel light up the night behind the darkened Bellagio.

Heh! That's the first thing that came to my mind, too! I was picturing George Clooney zipping down through the elevator shaft!

(Very cool pictures, I might add!)

Isn't there a song that says something about "the night the lights went out in Las Vegas"?

I bet $5 vs all your electricity...deal the cards.
Ooops, you lose.

Are the lights back on yet?
How much back up power must one have for emergencly lights for a hotel this size?

Latest news reports is that the work has been completed and now testing has to occur. The Hotel also has to prove and recertify itself to County Bulding, Fire and Health inspectors.

Gaming Control Board agents also have to be on scene for the possible reopening of the casino tomorrow. MGM Mirage spokesman was quoted as saying that company hopes to check in it's first new guest late Wednesday.

Oh, all casinos here have generators to run the facility in a limited capacity, the problem with the Bellagio (rumor anyways) is that the place where the 'power line failure' occured is in the same manhole as the transmisisons lines for the generators. To work on the damaged lines, they had to turn power off completely to make it safe for the workers.
