I took some of my 'Color Studio Portrait' shots to a lab to get them printed and they refused to print them without a copyright release from the photographer.

I was delighted that the pictures were thought to be done by a pro. I had to sign a release stating that I owned the copyright.

Now you had all better give me some good scores on the Challenege! :)

Looking at your stuff I can see why. When I worked in a photography store it was always very obvious when some one came in with pictures that weren't theirs and they never understood why we couldn't print them for them.

Bradshaw,

Thanks for the complement. Actually it's nice to know that at least some places are watching out for us.

Haha, I had that same thing happen with me at Walmart. I was taking a Photoshop class at school and had to get some prints. The harassed me about copyright and made me sign the releases as well. It was kind of funny.

I recently had that happen and the lady was very nice about it, she said she wasn't used to getting that caliber of work in there lol I thanked her ALOT and signed the paperwork. I am personally glad they check this sort of thing, I had too many people fight me about it when I worked at Kinko's trying to say they owned the rights since they bought the picture/magazine/book etc.

I don't think anywhere I get prints done even has copyright releases.

In fact they usually say "are you sure you want to print these" before they make them for me.

This happened to me at Costco with my Natural Light Portait entry last summer. The fact they thought it was professional would haven been complimentary if the guy wasn't so accusatory in his tone. It was obvious he thought I was lying and didn't even know what EXIF was when I asked him if he wanted to check it against my camera.

If DPC would just make some sort of ID badge or tattoo, we would be set. Just pull up to the counter, flash your DPC ID, the red carpet would come out and they would make sure that you got your prints, a slice of pizza and a chuchro.

Jason,

I just looked at your portfolio and I'm sure you would have been harassed where I went. You have some really great stuff!

I always use MPix, so I don't really know if they would hassle me. Most of my shots are of bands, so they might think I was a bit of a weirdo I guess. I am sure they would mess with the color! lol

Thanks for the kind words Roger!

Sam's does the same thing as well. They do ask for a release, especially when you shoot indoors with a paper background or canvas, but they don't have a release form and if somebody else is picking up the pictures they will not give them to that person unless you provide them with a release.
It is fine with me, at least they start to stay on top of things.
