A perfect example of the subjective reaction to art. Who gets to decide what is and isn't art? Who gets to decide on what is "good" art, and what is "poor" art?

We could, and do, apply the same kind of questions to the photographs entered in challenges.

For instance, I have a strong dislike for Polka music, but I would energetically defend the assertion that it is, without question, a valid art form.

It'll be interesting to see what the Conservatives do with the issue.

The general reaction (by the public) to the side of beef dress was that it was very distasteful and wasteful. And the person that got $2M for his stripe was probably laughing all the way to the bank.

IMHO:
1. The beef dress was a way cool idea.
2. The big price tag was what made the stripe 'art'.

For sure we'll get more polka from the P.C.s. Anyone remember that great picture of Pres. Bush senior looking like he was pushing the first lady down the steps from the airplane? Well, I think she was wearing a polka dot dress.

The arts is a business. You may need help getting your business off the ground but it needs to be viable to carry on just like any other business.

Maybe this is idealistic but being an artist doesn't mean you get an automatic handout from the government. This is a career choice, so you have to make it work or get another job that pays the bills.

Harsh? Maybe.

Agreed. I'd be all for loans to artists that they would need to pay back, just like any other business.

So...will I see any other DPC members there or not?

Well, it seems the Conservatives, adept at talking out of both sides of their mouths, have decided that the whole thing was too controversial -- and remember that an election is no time to talk about serious issues -- and have scrubbed the arts funding issue from their position, going so far as to announce such in their very belated platform. Will wonders, and hypocrisy, and cynical electioneering, never cease.

Sorry Louis, but this ability you allude to is not the exclusive domain of the Conservatives... I seem to remember many a Liberal promise that fell by the wayside once they were in power.

Harper has backed-off on some of the planned cuts (thanks for the links, Louis) but I think it's still a good idea to demonstrate the importance of the issue.

Demonstrating for non issues (it is now after he backtracked), is not a wise decision. You need to keep the energy for when he does cut the budget and you know he will after the election. Look at how many people were interested before he backtracked, do you think you'll gain more support now? Just my 2 cents.

Richard, I wish you good luck and I hope others can make it there today. As you know from my last post we're unable to attend but if things change (as they often do in this line of work) I'll be there.

MAX!

It was a pretty good event, with a decent turn-out. Here's the link to WGC.

I'll link to some of my photos as soon as I can get them uploaded.

Here's a few. I'll post more when I have the time.

There were a lot of cameras there. Any other DPC members in attendance?
