Prash - Everyone should vote their own way, and if a system like this works for you, go for it.

But by giving a comment to a photographer with a bunch of numbers on it, I think it really is not very helpful. This is just a fancy way of writing "7" as the only thing in the comment box.

Regarding the scoring values, I really don't want to pick on you, but provide you a bit of help here. Most of the time in challenges, meeting the challenge is obvious - therefore you would give a 5 for all those right? If it doesn't meet challenge, you give it a 0 right? How can it almost meet challenge and get a 3 or something....?

Secondly, if the challenge is "Red" and someone enters a blank image that is merely red in color but have no other detail, what would you do. This would meet the challenge so it would seem that you would give a 5 for this? hmmm...

Second, by only giving one point for originality, you are taking out one of the most important parts of photography to many of us here at DPC - that photography is also about art. Yes, art is subjective. But that is where the comments using words to describe how it touched you, moved you, disgusted you, etc. makes so much sense.

To be honest, I think a comment such as "I don't like red" is actually more helpful.

I would refer to posthumous's tutorial on commenting for more insight

this is a comment by our hilarious bagman

That's not a "comment", that's just a pile of statistics...

It is still better than no comment at all. It shows the strengths and weaknesses of the picture categorically and quantitatively.. better than a "DNMC" or a "Great pic, great DOF" IMO.

Prash - there's certainly some logic in what you're saying. What I don't understand though is why you would have 6 categories to give out 10 points ? It means that if you give any one of the categories a two or above, other categories must remain mathematically empty . .

Valid question. I have a maximum of 5 for the 'Meets the challenge' category. Rest are all given out of a maximum 1 point. So if an entry weakly meets the challenge, it might get a 3 lets say in that criterion, still leaving room for a total of 7/10. Hope that helps a bit. Again, these are just my criteria.

You should put then (x/5 or x of 5) -- Rating scale means nothing without know what it's out of.

I also cannot believe you gave mine 3/5 for meets challenge. That should be either 5/5 or 0/5. Something either meets the challenge or it does not. There is no variability per se. If you want to make that a huge chunk of the score (and I agree it's the most important thing), that's fine... but giving someone a 2 or 3 or 4 out of five because something didn't fit your narrow definition or view of the challenge is a bit silly.

And this has nothing at all to do with not taking criticism well, but your method is less helpful than a simple even 'Sorry it didn't work for me' comment. I'm not addressing my own comment here, but your method and the flaws within it.

I'd rather get no comment than a list of dry numbers.

Let's get back to the scheduled programme - how are peoples scores doing ?

How's that fight for Brown getting on ?

Who's over 7 and running away with the blue ?

I'm at 3.9

I figure cutout's score went up and that's why he's diverting the conversation... ;)

??? What criticism? There's nothing in a pile of dry stats that speaks emotively at all; complementing or criticising.

p.s. - When I commented earlier in this thread I did not know WHO was posting these "stats" in the comments for this challenge, so my thoughts on this weren't meant as a personal affront. No offense intended...my apologies if you thought I was having an issue with you personally.

Thank you Peter. This will definitely help in evolving my voting crtiteria and how they are weighed.
Much appreciated. I will also go over posthumous's tutorial to get hints.

hmmm - my score rose up - spent a day breathing fresh air, then panicked and went back down again . .

I need some nice kind voters to lift me up again - I think you all need to go back and re-assess the scores you have given out :- )

I think for most people it's just trying to understand how the scale works - which you've now explained :- )

For me, there is a danger that the format you are using comes across as a little impersonal, which is perhaps why people tend to use words rather than numbers, and verbalise what they see as the strengths and weaknesses.

Personally the more I comment, the harder I find it to put pictures into specific criteria - not least because my views are also evolving and changing. The more exposed I get to all the different streams of pictures and genres here on DPC, the more open I am to trying to understand where the person is trying to go with their picture - rather than trying to fit it to my expectations.

But that might just be me :- )

Thank you Steve. You bring some important points forth. Understandably, rating a picture is a subjective experience, as you said. But then again, with my voting style, it might just be me:-) I am trying to improve, but to be fairer, and not to conform to what the votees think. I appreciate your advice, and everyone else's advice.
You may agree that there are many people who vote with different criteria, and one certainly doesnt agree with all of their styles. So no matter how much I change my style, at least someone will not agree with that:-)

Anyways, thank you, thank you, thank you. Now let's focus on the purpose of the thread, please.

My score has spent the late afternoon and evening gently sliding downwards - which to be honest wasn't exactly my plan : (

I'm being killed by 5's which slowly suck the life out of you unless you are on a four . .

Here's a plan - I'll donate all my 5's to both posthumous & cutout to share between them :- )

Not great but not horrific. It's doing better than my other challenge entries anyway.

Hangin' on to that 5.1, but just barely! I'm good with it, though. I still really like the shot complete with all the flaws. I spelled out most of 'em in the photog's comments - feel free to add more after the challenge ends. :-)

Come on all you folk with the big scores - stop hiding away in the long grass . . show us what you've got.

Who's going to start the bidding with a 6.9 ?

Do I hear a 6.9 anyone ?

There are always 7's in each challenge (well ok not always - but certainly usually)

I know there's one out there I can sniff it on the wind . .

A brown with a favorite. That can't happen often.

I'm out of the running for the brown unless the typical thing happens where I post my stats and my score goes down... hehe
