So I know who Orson Welles is and I know he smoked cigars and had a beard. But right now I am searching out the image that a couple people have referred to my Product Ad entry being the copy of. Can anyone provide me a link to this image that they speak of? I googled various Orson Welles topics and couldnt come up with anything that resembled mine. I definitely did not take this shot with Orson in mind but I am curious as to the comparison.

This is all I could come up with: Orson Welles

That was the closest I found too. But it didn't seem that my image "copied" that one. And the search goes on.

I agree, yours doesn't look like a copy ...

The lighting looks a lot like Yousuf Karsh, the great Canadian portraitist. I thought I remembered a portrait he did of Orson Welles, complete with cigar, but all I could come up with was this one of H.G. Wells :-)

Tim, it never occurred to me while voting, but yes, there is a similar portrait of Orson Welles smoking a cigar. I'll join the search. :-)

EDIT: Couldn't find the one I was thinking of, but this one is very cool!

Another image.

The closest I could find

Here's an link to cigar smoking actors. None of which you have copied in my opinion. I don't understand what the big deal is. Why such comments? You photograph is very good and I don't see a coloration to a particular actor.

That is a very cool shot. Thank you all for your help in this endeavor. I am always up front when I use an image for inspiration. The couple of comments made on my image got me wondering. I guess I have some vindication in the fact that whatever image they were talking about is really hard to come by.

Why not PM the people who referred to Orson Wells...or at least cutout. Since they seem to be so familiar with this particular Orson Wells cigar shot, they shouldn't have a problem looking it up and helping you out? Maybe? They brought it up, so they should back up their claims.

I love the shot! AND......we all get inspiration from somewhere...it would be a compliment to the original photographer to have someone WANT to emulate the photograph, had that been the case.. (Notice I did NOT say copy...)

I think there was just some automatic association one person had between cigars and Orson Welles, and somebody else followed up. It's not a good association either. I'm crazy about Orson Welles' noirish photos, but that's not the first thing I thought of when I saw this picture. In fact, I didn't think of him all. I actually thought of Schwarzenegger and his cigar-chomping mug.

Reminded me of Tom Hanks w/a beard, lol!

My first though about this is Alfred Hitchcock's logo. I guess it's because it's a dramatic profile view.
How about Winston Churchill?

The dead speak to me.

Orson says that doesn't look a bit like him.

Case closed!

I don't believe you. OK, I believe you would have some sort of interest in said images, but the main interest is in stating to the world that someone said something and they're wrong and you're right.

People begin to look very small when they try to determine secret motives in others in such inconsequential circumstances.

I will admit it s a combination of the two. I do get somewhat irritated when people call me out for "copying" when I know I haven't. Especially considering the times i have been overly "inspired" I try and give credit where credit is due. I try to be as up front as I can be.

Now had it been just one person I probably would have just let it go. Especially after not finding the image he was referring to in the first place. But when a second person claimed the copy thing too of a specific image I became very curious as to what that image was. I know what my intentions were of this shoot, but I am very inetersted in seeing the image that my work emulates. Just has me very curious now thats all.

ETA - And yes - I was right. ;)

The image you are looking for may not have been for a cigar commercial, but one for wine (Paul Masson?) -- the one with the tag line "We will sell no wine before its time." I seem to remember him holding a cigar, even though tobacco ads we already off the air at the time.
