From DPReview: Carl Zeiss lenses for Canon SLRs
Includes a 50/1.4 and an 85/1.4, both of them manual focus.

DROOOOL, more money to save. I have an older Carl Zeiss lens and the IQ is amazing, I can only imagine that 85mm f1.4 on my baby.

What does it say about me .... when a "manual focus lens" (even with the name Carl Zeiss on it) doesn't turn me on?

Gasp!!! You mean Sony was ahead of Canon on this one? :-)
Several Carl Zeiss models to choose from. A few examples (Auto focus too BTW):

Sony Zeiss is a bit like Panasonic Leica.. same spelling but whole different ball game.

Ah, but of course. That whole Canon thing going on, eh? :-)
So, let's see...Canon Carl Zeiss® Planar® T* 85mm f/1.4, vs Sony Carl Zeiss® Planar® T* 85mm f/1.4.
They look pretty similar. The Sony's approx $100 more - guess that's for getting AF vs MF only? :-)

Licensed to / Made for is the difference, try not to take it personally mate I wasn't having a dig at the great Hi-Fi company (I am now yes) I was just stating a FACT. Carl Zeiss lenses with 'SONY' written down the side of them are Licensed, in the same way that a Panasonic P&S with 'LEICA' written on the front. Zeiss is not actually made for Canon either but for a company called CONTAX that made fantastic film cameras and got lost in the digital age so stuck to building Medium format.
As for the price difference, who knows? not I

The new prime Zeiss lenses (50 f1,4 85 f1,4 etc) are designed by Zeiss but not build by them. The Sony variant is build by Sony while the Nikon (ZF mount) is made by Cosina (which also builts Voigtländer, Bessa tc). For the Canon I don't know but is a safe bet that's build also by Cosina. The difference that I see between the Canon ZE and Nikon ZF variant (I have the ZF 50 f1,4) is that the Canon one has electronically controlled aperture (you have shutter priority) vs the Nikon ZF which has a mechanical one (only controlled by the aperture ring in the lens) so you need a Dxxx or Dx to have metering and aperture priority (but no shutter priority).
As for AF, the Canon will need a motor in the lens vs Nikon which can work like the Sony variant driven by the camera motor but I don't know why is not supported... maybe just a marketing desision.

| My compact Sony cameras, DSC-T200 and DSC-S40 both have Zeiss licensed lenses, the quality from the vario-tessar lenses is truly superb, especially since the T200 packs 5x optical zoom into a non-protruding lens, in a camera bout half an inch thick! |
